Casa Lavania is right next door to Casa Frankie and located on an interesting street that leads straight up to the city-centre. The room we had on the ground floor was Marrakesh themed (if I am not mistaken) with a great bed, spacious bathroom and overall a very relaxing atmosphere. We found the host - we forgot his name but he is originally from France - very friendly and knowledgeable. Ask him for food options if you are unsure. Unfortunately we had some rain during the trip and may have spent more time in the room than we desired but were relieved to have such a comfortable room with a great host around. Breakfast is decent but basic.
We stayed at casa lavinia for 2nights, and it was a great experience! The host, Giuseppe, was so friendly and helpful. He showed us all the rooms of the hostel (this was possible because we were the only guests at the time, as he was renovating the hostel), and every single room is especially decorated and has its "special name and topic". The house has an old colonial style, is very clean and well located, and the breakfast was very good as well. Giuseppe showed us around the neighbourhood and in the night we had the chance to go out with him.
We had a lot of fun - thanks for this great experience Giuseppe!

Like São Luis itself, this place has clearly seen much better days. Service (apart from the breakfast lady) was non-existent, bedlinen didn't fit the mattress (itself sagging & deformed), room was dirty, no guest fridge (daily temp 35C!). Luckily we had the large room with windows-a "privilege" denied the others. Stay at Frankie's next door-avoid this over-priced, poorly run place 👎
It's a nice Pousada right in the Historic center of São Luis. Every room has its own theme like Zanzibar etc.
The owners brought that old colonial gem of a building to new life. Carefully implementing the past.
All rooms are air condition equipped.
A nice breakfast is included.
The owners speak different languages like English, Italian and French and help you to organize what ever you need. Sightseeing, Local SIM card installation or a trip to Barreirinhas and the lencois Marahenses.
The only downside is the price. Compared to the really nice Casa Franki (right next door) it is hard to justify the overnight price. And Casa Franki has a pool.
We stayed for just one Sunday night in a family room in the heart of the old city of Sao Luis. Lots of buildings in a bad condition, but the atmosphere of the city centre at weekends in the evening/at night is definitely worth a visit. Music everywhere and lots of local people in the streets. It´s a bit apart from the usual touristic spots in Brazil. We felt safe but anything can happen in Brazil. We didn´t visit the waterfront/beach in the other part of the city.
Accomodation was very good, central, clean, quiet and safe. Though days and nights were hot, the rooms were fine without using the ceiling fans. Mosquito nets for each bed. Helpful owner who can organise a comfortable taxi to Barreirinhas and the following boat trip to Atins at a reasonable price. Recommended.
