We returned to the Isle of Skye at the end of September and into early October for three nights and decided to stay once again at this charming little B and B. The breakfast was excellent with lots of good choices for us as vegetarians, and Mairi is an attentive and warm hostess. She gave my husband some of her cough medicine last March when we there and he was suffering, and our experience with her is that she is friendly, approachable, and helpful with tips on local excursions. The room was large and the ensuite bathroom was beautifully laid out so that we could wash our hiking clothes at the end of each day. It was a great experience and we would absolutely stay there again upon our return to Skye.
The owner Mairi was rude & hostile. The check in was confusing & designed to suit the owner not the guests. We arrived at 6.15pm to an old faded note on the door stating we could find her at 1 of 2 restaurants she owns in Portree & phone numbers to contact her on. We are from Australia so after driving into town to find one of the restaurants closed down & no address for the other we then had to call her international to contact her. She was rushed & dismissive when we met her back at the b & b.
But the main issue we had with her was the false advertising of the 2 bed & bathroom family room we had booked for 2 nights. It was actually 2 completely separate bedrooms & a separate bathroom all only accessed separately by a communal hallway. The owner asked us to choose which room we wanted. We were confused & said so. She stated that this is how she does it. Neither room had an ensuite just a bathroom off the hallway for both rooms to share. We chose the room with 2 single beds as it looked a tad larger although still small and we felt we had no choice but to stay even though it wasn't what we had booked & after an 8 hour drive in solid rain we were exhausted. As the owner was still not on site, later that evening we emailed her to say we were confused as the room we had received was clearly not what we had booked. I also explained that I had put my medication that needed refridgeration into the fridge in the kitchen just inside the kitchen door so she would know who it belonged to if she saw it there as again there was no one on site to ask to do it for me. She sent me an extremely rude email back yelling at me in capitals & exclamation marks reprimanding me for this. I knew why as the back of house was a mess & she obviously did not want anyone to see this.
I did knock numerous times & the door was not locked. Regardless, it was appaling of her to behave in such an antagonistic way. It is important for my health that the medication be in the fridge & any reasonable person would understand this. When she arrived home late that night she brought up a key to the second bedroom and aggressively gave it to my husband. He told her there was no point now in using that bedroom as it still meant walking in a communal hallway so we didn't use it. My husband then went downstairs to speak further to her as the situation was unacceptable and he tried to negotiate with her & said how can we resolve this? The response from her stated in a sarcastic tone that we weren't going to get our money refunded. She appeared very agitated and aggressive in her demeanor. After receiving the aggressive email from her on the first night & her aggression in person we knew we could not stay the second night so left before breakfast & cancelled our second night then drove to a beautiful hotel in Oban which more than made up for this horrible experience at Breton House on Isle of Skye.
As a note for families travelling, the advertised 2 bedroom family room as Breton House describe it would not suit a family with children as you would either have to lock them in as other people could access their rooms if left unlocked.
The owner had pointed out the one robe for my husband and I to share to go to the bathroom. This is not acceptable either.
Outside our small window was left over hard rubbish in sight, not a good look.
There appeared to be a problem too with guttering at Breton House as all night it was raining & we heard the loud sound of water pouring onto something. Made it very difficult to sleep. It was not the lovely sound of rain on a roof either. A choice between closing the small window and having no fresh air or the noise. If I could upload the video I took I would.
We travel extensively & I can honestly say this was the worst experience with a hotel/bnb owner we have ever had. From false advertising to harrassment of us for mentioning it, this is not what we expect when booking a property through booking.com. We left a sentence in her visitors book which she subsequently emailed me again abusing me.
Breton House was clearly not as advertised & was in sharp contrast to all the other lovely accommodation we stayed at during this 5 week trip.
We had a very comfortable room with a beautiful view of the harbor. (Be sure to ask for Room #2!) They also offer a dram of Whiskey for your enjoyment. While the place was a tad difficult to find, it is in a great location and worth a visit.
Our hosts were very accommodating of our desire to eat vegetarian.
We had a lovely stay at Breton house. We were lucky to get room 2 with a very comfortable bed and lovely view. The room was very clean and tidy. Everything was provided in the room. Breakfast was lovely with fresh fruit salad and hot breakfast. Mairi the host was lovely and helped with suggestions of what to do around the isle of Skye. Would certainly recommend staying there.
Four of us booked a three-night stay at Breton House for the Skye portion of our weeklong trip to Scotland during March Break. As soon as we arrived from the long drive from Glasgow, our hostess immediately made us feel at home by offering my husband some soothing throat medicine as he was nursing a cold. We were given two beautifully maintained private rooms with a shared en-suite bath and free access to the dining area, which was a large living-room downstairs with a sofa, tables where we could play cards and bring in our own suppers if we wished (which we did on the last two nights instead of going to local restaurants). We were also told to help ourselves to the local whisky blend that was available to guests. The breakfasts were generous and filling, and there were excellent vegetarian options for the two of us who didn't eat meat. The rooms were clean, the service and attentiveness by Maire and her family was exceptional, and I would highly recommend this guest house to anyone considering a stay in Portree or looking for a base from which to explore Skye. Being in such a warm and hospitable place within easy reach of all the natural attractions we wanted to see made our stay on Skye enjoyable and wonderful. Great place at a very reasonable rate. Thank you Maire for sharing your home with us so that we could have such a great time on Skye.
