We had booked two nights at Hillhead but only stayed one.
We were greeted at the gate by a friendly lady who advised us what to do as we are new to Caravanning and camping, we found a lovely pitch with a small hedge on either side, we have a dog so there was plenty of room for her to run around. Beautiful views over the sea, a lovely field to roam around with my dog on lead and a large area for the dogs off lead, the site is very clean and well maintained, the shower and toilet block was regularly cleaned and social distancing was adhered to, the band system was also used at Hurn Lane in Somerset and at both sites worked well. A nice seating area outside the club/pub area where dogs are welcomed, this is a very dog friendly site. There is a bus stop outside where you can buy a day rider and explore Torquay Paignton and Brixham.
Now the reason why we only stayed one night, we understand there are children running around and on bikes and scooters which is good as to a certain extent this is a safe site, but we had a family next to us whose two sons kicked, bounced and punched their football for hours on end, perhaps a sign should be put up No Footballs to be played Here outside pitches, especially as there is a large field to play football, the playground was closed on the first day but at 8pm the following evening was open. There was no tv signal in our camper van and the phone signal was awful, perhaps because we were on a hill as on other sites the signal had been excellent.
We have just left hillhead campsite very disappointed. The rules that the caravan club have in place because of covid is just over the top and lots of people we spoke to agreed. The government has given guidelines to get camping facilities open and encouraging people to go camping to get the economy going the caravan club seem to still be in lockdown, band systems on toilets which doesn’t work when 75% toilets closed which Is then diverting everyone to the same sink , no urinals in use directing everyone to same toilet, I saw loads people not abiding to band system as I certainly didn’t myself, play area closed when all other parks open on other campsites not in caravan club, pool closed when others in area open even local Waterpark open, no cash payments taken at all (how do they think supermarkets and other shops been managing last 4 mth s), games room not open even though amusements open everywhere else, only serving take away food no restaurant open when everywhere else in area is we ate at lots of different restaurants, it is all just OTT and by the end of our holiday couldn’t wait to leave the rules. We now on another campsite in Somerset with everything open play areas and indoor never mind outdoor pools with slides. Ignore the other reviews of unruly kids as we saw non of this you get kids on scooters and bikes everywhere at all campsites but when no pool or park open then what else can they do. Great dog walking area I saw no dogs messing around caravans as one reviewer has Said and as for disinfecting the ground after a dog as fouled how ridiculous. This is usually a fantastic site but it has really spoilt our opinion of the caravan club , come on caravan club I think it’s time you caught up with the ever changing times we face at the minute. I have worked in the hospital on the frontline throughout covid so understand the dangers but things need to get moving sensibly .
We visited during the winter and had a pitch with a lovely sea view. Plenty of room here, not crammed in and a good choice of pitches. Bar prices good. Food average. Pool closed as it is winter. Pleasant welcome from site assistant manager. Will return.
We’re just on our last night of 10 at Hillhead. We originally should have gone home this morning but due to bad weather (Storm Hannah) forecast we booked for an extra night so we weren’t towing in the high winds. Staff are brilliant, very friendly and helpful. Bar area is lovely and clean and food is also very nice. Conservatory is a brilliant idea as you can go and sit and have a drink or something to eat and takes dogs with you. Toilets and showers are immaculate which is a massive thing for us as a family. The only downside I can think is that I thought the laundry room was a bit pricy.... cost me £6 to wash and dry one load. But other than that Hillhead is a fab site and we will definitely return at some point in the future.
We live in the Midlands and are members of the caravan and motorhome club. The website page allows you to book your pitch but as members you get a discount and the website doesn't allow for it. However if you phone up you get a lovely gentleman on the other end of the phone who is very helpful in getting your discount. easy drive down the M5 and A38 to the site. When it is busy there is one female member of staff who is a bit short with you when you check in. All other staff very helpful. The sites swimming pool is heated to about 30 degrees centigrade and the pool side showers are warm so you don't get a shock getting in and out of the pool. very where is clean and tidy. We didn't try the food in the club house as we were off exploring and had meals out.
The play ground is new and if you are lucky the children get joined by bunnies. The only drawback to the play park is there are no swings for toddlers.
Family room and toddler rooms are clean and have plenty of space.
At night as there is minimal ambient light if the sky is clear there is a wonderful view of the stars. we were lucky enough to see the milkyway and mercury.
There is a separate dog walking area and playing field although some dog owners forget this and there is sometimes dog mess in the children's playing field.
The shop is reasonably priced and does lovely raspberry croissants freshly baked daily. There is adequate room on the pitches so privacy is not an issue. we found our neighbouring tourers friendly.
I would definitely recommend it to others but just expect one member of staff to be slightly abrupt in busy times. I think she must get a little stressed.
