I was over the whole CV19 cabin fever and had to get away for a weekend. Ended up staying 5 nights. The Dunes is a resort so most of the facility was up and functioning [food service and restaurant was not].
I stayed first few nights in a 2 BR cabin with kitchenette. The room sizes and living room were an adequate size for those staying a night or a couple weeks. The 2 BR had a shared hot tub.
The 1 BR duplex is even more suited for a longer visit as it has a full kitchen, nice patio and hot tub.
The property, pool and hot tubs were well maintained and very clean.
What even makes the place a better value and stay is the staff. Professional at the operations level and warm and friendly at the same time. Made guests feel at home and part of the family so to speak.
The motel is comfortable - they've improved it a lot over the years. Housekeeping is excellent. Rooms and beds are comfortable. Pool is fun. Grounds are nicely landscaped w/ amazingly beautiful trees. A few nice, simple bkfst spots. Wish they'd do more to encourage guests to mingle, esp. free coffee in the morning in the bar.
This was our first time at the Dunes. Stayed Friday through Monday. We booked 2 king rooms in the new building overlooking the pool. One room had a separate living room that also connected to the other bedroom. We are from Ann Arbor and meeting friends from Wisconsin so this was perfect, having a common area to socialize.
Pros: Rooms were clean and comfortable with coffee maker and small refrigerator in
King sized beds in both rooms.
Staff was very friendly and accommodating.
The room was quiet, appreciated that the music at the pool ended at dusk and the
music from the bar was negligible at night.
Food available at the pool was surprisingly good, and within 5 min. walking
distance to the Blue Star cafe for breakfast/lunch.
Plenty of towels available at the pool (and in the rooms).
Not really cons: Would like in-room safe to lock up valuables while at the pool.
Surprised by the number of female parties held there (birthday, bachelorette,
pregnancy) but I guess its probably the best place for a bunch of women to party
Tip: If you stay upstairs in the new building, the large windows face east and you will get the morning sun, so if you want to sleep in, bring eye shades.
Will definately consider a return.
This was our first time staying at The Dunes and we took advantage of their weekday 3-night special pricing, so I found the room affordable. Since the room was prepaid, the check-in process was quick and easy and the staff was very friendly and helpful.
Once we got to our room, we did discover a distinct smell of bleach, but it wasn’t horrible. The room/bathroom were neat and clean and it was very quiet during our stay (despite quests on either side and above us). Room amenities were fairly standard, though lighting and seating options were somewhat limited. There were two comfortable queen beds and a small table with two chairs by the front window. A foldable luggage rack would have been a nice addition since there were not a lot of flat surface areas to place our bags on. The air conditioner worked and kept the room cool enough. However, it never got really cold in the room, even when we turned it down to 66 degrees. The cleaning staff were friendly and very accommodating during our stay.
As for the resort, we stopped by the main bar for a drink on the first night and to listen to the piano music. Drinks were reasonably priced, both at the main bar and pool bar. The pool area is very nice and spacious, with a large pool and plenty of seating for patrons. We stayed Monday-Thursday, so it was not overly crowded and we found it enjoyable, although the water temperature could have been a little bit warmer. The resort grounds are large and there are trails to walk and enjoy.
The Dunes Resort is conveniently adjacent to both Douglas and Saugatuck, both of which have very quaint downtown areas. It’s also only a short drive up to Holland, MI. All areas have lots of shops and dining options. There is also a large antique pavilion just up the road.
Overall, it was a quiet, comfortable stay and we look forward to a return trip for another visit.
we have stayed here several times and like it but there are 3 things that other places offer that would make it even better. for the price the rooms are they should have a safe to lock valubles in the rooms also the pool needs to be open early in the morning and late.in the evening for those who can't handle the heat of the day.. and an option for late night food would be great even if it was like a local food truck or something.
