Vista De Olas was the perfect Costa Rica resort.
We arrived and met the family of staff there and felt right at home with their laid back nature and their sense of adventure. We immediately fell in love with the view and couldn't get enough of the wildlife all around us.
Every morning we had monkeys playing outside of the back porch of our personal villa. Every time we swam in the pool, we had a big iguana come out to greet us. Our villa had a beautiful outdoor shower which felt like bathing in nature.
Generally, we don't spend much time at the resort so I usually wouldn't have too much to say, but this place really exceeeding our expectations.
Aside from the resort itself, we went on nearly every tour they had to offer and they were all incredible. We surfed, went deep-sea fishing, snorkeled, ATV'd, and they even organized a zipline tour for us.
The perfect mix of adventure and relaxation!
Wonderful sunsets from the infinity pool. We have been visiting Olas for the last 15 years and have seen the crowds come to this wonderful spot. It's always bittersweet to see a hidden gem's secret get out. That said, Roger and his family & team have grown with the times and have continued to maintain the property and come up with new ways of doing things. Food is good and you can't beat the well cared-for pool and the swim up bar. It's not cheap, but I've never left feeling regretful of the money spent. Instead, I leave feeling satisfied and thankful - usually with a buzz from the awesome mojitos.
Mixed feelings about our time at Vista de Olas, that said it's a stunning place and the brothers running it are super lovely and accommodating.
After driving up a very steep dirt track it took us several attempts in our SUV, we arrived at the hotel just before 2, to be told that we couldn't check in until nearer 3 as the person to check us in was out. Check in is advertised from 2. We ordered some lunch, a bowl of chicken rice, which cost an expensive $20. After checking in the deluxe villa vista room was nice and clean and view was stunning, although there appeared to be abandoned building works to the bottom left of our view and the railings along the walk to the villa broken. The bathroom was covered in little leaves from the tree above with lots of large ants surrounding the toilet making it unsettling to use and the shower went from freezing cold to boiling hot. Aircon worked well and bed super comfortable. Despite several attempts by staff to fix the lock to the safe, it didn't work for the duration of our trip. It didn't bother us too much as the place felt safe. We headed to the pool for a beer and to watch the sunset and there appeared to be a party going on, lots of people by the pool with loud music playing. This only lasted until just after the sunset and then everyone disappears. Breakfast next day was interesting as the chef is also the waiter, he was very busy and he couldn't speak much english. Each day he would bring out fresh fruit and offer two options, rice and bean with egg or egg/omelette. The food was average. We had to ask daily for some glasses and milk. There is a resident dog called Tokyo who is friendly and happy to come and say hello. The score I have rated is a strong 3. Recommend to stay in a different room/villa and arrive after 3 or come for drink and swim and watch the sunset.
Amazing. The owner Roger and his family have created a one of a kind, laid back, quality establishment that leaves you feeling taken care of and at home. A comfortable place where you can relax and do your thing. They arranged transportation for us, set up massages in our room, and took care of any question or concern we had. Roger's son's Swen and Michael own a local surf shop (Tico Brothers). We took multiple surf lessons with them and Anthony (their other instructor). Hands down, everyone at Vista De Olas, made our experience one of the best we've ever had. Our villa had an outdoor bathroom where we could watch hummingbirds, blue jays and hear the sounds of the ocean. Quiet and restful at night. The sunsets at the pool are a thing of wonder. As has been noted in previous reviews, the pool is open to the public from sunset until about 8 pm. We found this to be a really cool aspect because it provides a sense of community with locals and other travelers. You get to meet people from all over the world and locals who live in the area at the same time. All in all we had a great stay and will definitely be back again as soon as we can.

We arrived a bit frustrated as the hill up to the hotel is quite steep and our car was unable to go up. But I walked up, ran into the owner who helped us bring our car and from there we rented a quad which made it SO much better to go around. The owner is getting that issue resolved as the driveway is getting cemented this year.
Hotel is super quiet, has an amazing view of the Pacific Ocean. The only time it gets busy is at sunset as a lot of people come and buy a day pass to see it as it’s worth everything. Bar/ restaurant shuts down early, along with wifi however, we are not the loud crazy party people so it was okay for us. If you are that kind of person, there’s plenty to do around and bars to go to party. We couldn’t get wifi inside the room but got some signal on the balcony.
Anything you need, just ask. We got great recommendations for dinners and lunch out at local joints.
Nice pool, but mostly nice owners. It made all the difference. One day he drew us a map so we could go and explore on our own, we stopped at t two micro breweries had great local lunch and beers.. saw some falls, zip line... amazing day.
We stayed at the hotel for 5 days. We stayed in villa #6. Everything was perfect, I would gladly come back and recommend anyone that enjoys quiet small hotels to come here.
