This hostel was relatively easy to find, straight down the busy shopping street. We were able to leave our luggage while we explored the castle and surrounding area. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful and the location was amazing being only a few minutes away from the castle, (which is one of the only things to really see in Himeji) and being easily accessed from the train station.
We were staying in the annex part of the hostel, about 1 min away from the main hostel front. To say it was cosy was abit of an understatement, they had done their best to make the place as cute as possible with little signs and decorations here and there etc but it really felt quite tacky and on a closer inspection the place was actually quite dirty. There was dust and hairs all over the top of the microwave and kettle area and the bed had a damp smell about it.
I can imagine the room feeling very claustrophobic when full, we had one empty bed while we stayed so it wasn't too bad. And it was just unfortunate for us that the other guest who was there snored the whole night, echoing around the whole place keeping us both awake for most of the night, thats no ones fault, I know, just a downfall of staying in a hostel dorm I suppose!
However, positive things to note about this place are the location, price and nice friendly, staff.
The hostel is located between Himeji Station and the Castle. A very good location for sightseeing. Its squeezed between shops on the covered shopping street so if you like people watching this place is great. The place is pretty quiet after the shops close down in the evening. Small bedroom space (just enough to walk between the beds) and there is a staircase with a very low ceiling (might be a problem for taller people). The actual bed is big and feels really cosy. Tatami mats on the floor and sturdy wooden bunks/capsule with curtains on all sides for privacy. The place is overall fairly clean. The lounge space is like a cosy living room, I really liked that. The staff are really relaxed and easy going, nice to have a chat with.
Decent comfortable bed, staff was very friendly and helpful. But the place was too packed and too many beds in one room which made it difficult to sleep. there was a massive obese guy in the adjacent bed that snored very loudly who affected my sleep. So I was not very happy. Avoid the 12 or 16 bed room as that is not sound proof and anyone coming in at 3am from partying will wake the entire room. So the sleep was not good. Only thing good was location which is near himeji castle, and staff was nice
This is a very low budget place. I meant it is not just the price, but also the place and service. They have one private room only, the rest of them are dorms with a lot of bunk beds in just one room, The room looks dark because they have partitions among the beds, top and bottom part of bunk beds. Small guesthouse with a restaurant or cafe in the front, so it is loud and noisy in the evening. The checking time is 04:00 pm so if you get there before that you have to hangout somewhere else. Even though they are nice enough to let you drop the luggage and bags, but you cannot go in or use the bathroom to take a bath if it is not 04:00 pm sharp!
We stayed one night at 588 GH during our journey accross japan inTrain!
It is convenient and pretty clean! The people were nice and when they saw we were a couple they move us on an individual room even if we booked for a shared room! But it was quite busy, it looks like more to me like a juvenile house but anyway for one night and the budget!
The price is really correct and you can go anywhere from the place!
