Perfect location, just towards the bottom of Cerro Alegre. Great communication with the owner before our arrival and when we arrived. We had a room next the courtyard which could be noisy (a normal chatty level of noise) but ear plugs blocked it out and we had no problem sleeping 2 of the nights. On Saturday night, some of the people who i think live here had a party in the courtyard, nothing wild just drinks, food and music. This went on until around 1am and made this night difficult to sleep which is the only reason it’s a 4, not a 5. Rooms were a little dated but exceptionally clean and comfortable and the WiFi is the best we have had in all of Argentina and Chile.
On arrival the owner explained the house is old and so the rooms can get a little damp/smelly but we just aired the room out when we were in it and it genuinely wasn’t a problem. He also showed us the 2 gardens for our use and a living room complete with Netflix and a PS4 if you wanted to use that.
The breakfast was simple but nice and everything was so laid back. Comfy, cosy and a real feeling of a house/student accommodation. Lovely vibe! If you want a hotel this is not for you but if you want a clean home/hostel to explore Valparaíso from at a good price this is the place!

We booked a twin room which was good with a desk and a chair, a cabinet where you can put your clothes. There is no window but a door with glasses so you still have daylight. We saw other twins that were bigger and with window.

Shared bathrooms are good too. No towels.
You can use the laundry washing machine for 4000CHP.

Shared kitchen is a bit small and turn rapidly messy as there is limited space to store plates, ustensils and people are not drying dishes after use. For breakfast, you have tea or coffee with milk, jams, butter, bread, eggs, fruits.

Wifi is good. The manager is nice and helpful. There is a room whee you can store your luggage after check-out.

Location is ideal : 5 min walk to Plaza Sotomayor where you can get the old trolley.

I spent one week in a single room on the first floor and was extremely happy with the place.

The place is perfectly run by host Jaime, who is like a father to his guests, and a calm and kind person.

My room was simple, functional and clean. Eveything was working, no damages, no bad smell, no creepy crawlies.

Bathrooms are clean, too, quite large and in good condition.

The fully equipped kitchen and the living room next door are places for socializing, cooking and keeping your foodstuffs (in lockers, even).

As the building is about 100 years old and has wooden floors, you can hear people walk and talk if they're of the noisy kind.

Safetywise the neighbourhood is not the best, but which place in Valparaiso is? The area uphill from the hostel is rather unsafe. On the other hand you're down at Plaza Sotomayor (buses, collectivos, metro, food) and the port within five minutes on foot.

Guests tend to stay for weeks or months, so Los Gaviotines has a familiar atmosphere. One of the best hostels I ever stayed at, and a warm recommendation.

Where do I begin? This place is incredible! Hostel Los Gaviotines is all the vibrant colour, sounds and flavour of Valparaíso within the walls of a single building. It feels like home but the many rooms and living spaces ~dining room, TV room and three outdoor patios {!} make it feel like a small bohemian village. I will never forget attempting to play chess on the giant tiled board in the patio on the ground floor, celebrating my birthday with homemade pizza, many MANY authentic Chilean asados {BBQs} and the fantastic and diverse people I met there! Sharing a house with Argentinian, French, German, Spanish, Mexican, American and of course Chilean students, couples and families makes for a pretty unforgettable experience! The hostel owner, Jaime, is such a marvellous person ~I am yet to meet someone who knows more about the local area or with better stories to tell, he made me laugh countless times and is always willing to help out with anything and since his family is comprised of professional skiers, snowboarders and surfers, he is pretty much a one-stop shop for tourist advice on trips to ski resorts, beaches and places in the south of Chile such as Villarica and Pucon. The location is perfect for sight-seeing, catching a bus, taxi or metro and is really safe. I could go on and on about how great this place is! I completely recommend this hostel, whether it's for a weekend or longer, your trip will be all the better for it! Grande los Gaviotines!!
