We made a return visit to Fairfield House, again for just one night, after a great stay during a previous visit to this part of the world. It was a friendly welcome back from Shruti and we were the only guests for the night, so had the house to ourselves. We chose the same room on the front of the house and it's simple unfussy style was instantly calming. The lack of TV isn't an issue, it's a place to enjoy some peace and quiet.

We'd again arranged for a three course vegan dinner and Shruti put on another amazing spread. She was also very happy to chat with us about all things vegan and share some of her cooking tips after dinner, a great host. Breakfast the next morning was fantastic too, so much thought and effort goes into the food here and it's such a joy to find such great vegan-friendly food at a B&B.

Highly recommended for anyone travelling in this part of the UK, but especially so for any vegies/vegans who will appreciate the amazing food on offer here.

Shruti is a fantastic host who was a pleasure to deal with. Fairfield House is incredibly tranquil, clean and well run. The vegetarian food is home cooked and delicious. There is a small sauna and hot-tub which were great and easy to use. The room we had was large and very comfortable. We also had a yoga class with Shruti which was very useful as we were both beginners and good value (IMO) at £30 for an hour of private tuition.

Shruti went above and beyond to ensure we had a great stay as a surprise birthday present. The house is within the town (so no view) but very close to the national park. Would highly recommend.

I spent 5 nights on the Osho Meditation Retreat in October. This is a lovely place to stay the cleanliness and hygiene was really good throughout. The food was amazing Shruti is a very good chef. The house is on a main road but I did not find this to be disturbing and I had the window open in my room. The house is in a village and from my room I had a view of the hills which was very nice. Shruti and David are very good hosts and I was very well looked after. Thank you Shruti and David

We booked this as part of a break away for my husbands birthday and sadly were disappointed. He had been really looking forward to a stay here, not least because it was advertised as having a hot tub that we could enjoy (a facility that is written into the price). We had a long drive and arrived keen to jump in and unwind, and soothe tired legs, but were told when we mentioned it that it was not turned on, nor would it be for the duration of our stay. This would've been fair enough if it was broken but the reason we were given was that the owner was going on holiday in two days time! I don't really think this is acceptable, and if a facility is being withheld, the b&b should either have let us know, or given us a bit of money off the bill. We expressed our disappointment. Nothing doing.

So we contented ourselves with the fact the room had a bath. Except, again, un be-known to us, this facility wasn't available. I ran a bath and it repeatedly let the water out, my husband tried. Same result. I went down to reception to ask for assistance. No-one there. I left it half an hour, went back down, no-one there. I knocked on the door of the owners apartment. No answer. This was about 9pm. I went back to the room and thought Id use the phone to call down. Except there was no phone! No way at all of getting in touch with the owner after 9pm! Its a nice idea to be able to check guests in and then shut yourself away for the night, but it doesn't really constitute service! Also my concern had been, what if there was an actual emergency?

A plumber wasn't called. The next day, after being out at dunster castle for the day (which is a great day out) we were told by the owner on our return that the plug mechanism hadn't been working because it had been in need of a 'really good clean'. !!! Why wasn't this done before our arrival or as part of routine maintenance!? Seems bizarre that we should pay for a room with a bath, not be able to use the bath, and again. not be offered any money off the bill. I have since contacted the owner to express my concerns and heard nothing back.

My final concern regarded hygiene in the breakfast room. All the breakfast food bowls were uncovered, including yoghurt, and because the B&B is on a main road, with lorries thundering past, the windows are kept closed, meaning the two or three big fat flies in the room were there for the duration and crawling on the food. Not good!!! Obviously very off-putting! The road noise also meant we couldn't really have the window in our room open which made the bedroom very hot and stuffy.

Overall a real shame. We picked this place for the vegetarian food and the hot tub and obviously were disappointed on both counts. We selected our particular room on the basis that it was the one with a private bathroom and included a bath and here we were disappointed as well. I think to not have a means of contacting the staff after 9pm is not very good at all. And to send an email requesting a discussion about concerns and get no response, well that says it all really, doesn't it.

Response from DavidFairfield51, Owner at Fairfield House
Responded 18 Nov 2015
Thank you for taking what must have been a considerable time to post this review of your experience at Fairfield House. And thank you also for contacting us on the 4th of October about the issues you encountered during your stay in June, 3 months previously, and requesting a partial reimbursement, as you wrote, “before leaving a review of Fairfield”. In that message, you only mentioned the hot tub, which Shruti addressed in her response of the 14th of October. We offered what we felt was generous compensation for your disappointment in the form of a free night’s bed and breakfast in our premier room. Inevitably, because of the 4 months between your stay and your review, Shruti’s recollection of your stay is different from yours and we regret that so many misunderstandings seem to have arisen. Our B&B room prices are based on the accommodation and food provided only. We offer spa weekends at Fairfield House so, as you will see on our web site, our sauna and hot tub are available for those programmes. For our Bed and Breakfast guests, as explained in the guest information brochure in your room, we may make a charge for the use of the leisure facilities, though we often waive this. It also says in the brochure, “If you would like to avail yourself of these facilities, please let us know in advance …… we also have a hot tub in the garden which is available with 24 hours’ advance notice.” Unfortunately we did not have sufficient notice to fill the hot tub for you and get it up to temperature, though Shruti was able to offer you the use of the sauna, which you declined. Shruti has a clear recollection of receiving a call from you about the bath plug after eleven at night. In common with most B&B’s, we do not provide a 24 hour reception or maintenance service, as explained in the guest information brochure in your room: “Between 9 pm and 7.30 am, please note that we have no night duty staff. In the case of emergencies only during those hours, please call the emergency number posted at Reception.” It seems that, following the directions, you did find a way to contact Shruti overnight. The bath plug mechanism was fixed the following morning. It is unfortunate that you gained the impression that this and the way we present our breakfast buffet both indicate some shortcomings in our standards of hygiene. As witnessed by numerous other reviews here and elsewhere, Shruti is punctilious about all aspects of hygiene and cleanliness. This also extends to the food preparation and presentation where we have a rating of five stars for hygiene. It is a shame that you overlooked the positives in your review: that Shruti thought to put a birthday card in the room for your husband, that she prepared a special three course vegan dinner for you which you enjoyed so much you asked her for the recipe, and that she served a special vegan cooked breakfast for you. We are truly sorry that, in spite of this, you found the food disappointing and felt it necessary to rate all the aspects of your stay so poorly. We are confident, however, that this does not truly represent the quality and care for which Fairfield House has become known amongst its many satisfied guests over the years. Shruti and David

We stayed at Fairfield House for just one night during a tour around Southern England in September and October from Australia, choosing to stay at vegetarian B&Bs wherever possible.

On booking, Shruti provided lots of great information and her welcome was warm when we arrived at the property. As the only guests for the night, we got very individual treatment and our room (on the front of the house) was spacious, very clean and surprisingly quiet (the road is a fairly busy one through Williton).

We opted to take dinner at Fairfield as well - and this was a great decision! Our three-course vegan dinner was fantastic - beautifully presented high quality food with non-rushed service and friendly conversation from Shruti throughout her service.

Overall, we really enjoyed the sense of calm at Fairfield House and the great food (both for dinner and the excellent breakfast, Shruti goes to a huge amount of effort with the food here) and would certainly recommend it as a place to stay for anyone in the area (and especially vegetarians who will appreciate the effort Shruti takes with her food preparation).
