Imagine living in an historic (dating from 1700) Amsterdam house with traditional exterior and modernised interior. Imaging sitting in an air-conditioned, sunlit room, with access to books, WiFi, TV, DVD player (and hundreds of DVDs), surrounded by artworks and photographs of jazz greats. Imagine a green garden, with wooden decking and furniture, enjoying the natural surroundsound of birdsong. Imagine a clean, comfortable bedroom, with shelves of art and music books, separate toilet and shower with toiletries. Imagine a kitchen area, with a fridge stocked with meat, cheeses, smoked salmon, fruit juice, yoghurt, milk. Imagine a coffee machine (stocked with capsules), a blender, a kettle, a variety of teas, biscuits, soups, sweets. Imagine all the cutlery, plates, dishes and glasses you might want. Imagine a full bowl of fresh fruit awaiting visitors and a ‘bread fairy’ that quietly delivers a variety of freshly baked breads each morning. Imagine a gregarious owner, a store of local knowledge, who can provide guided tours of Amsterdam.
Bed & Guide has all of these and more – there is no need to imagine: it is a reality! The location is ideal, within walking distance to the centre but removed enough that guests will not be disturbed at night. Trams and busses are a short walk away. It is also a very safe area and a haven of peace after a day of touring.
My wife and I had visited Amsterdam some years ago. Then, we did the usual tourist things such as visits to museums, galleries and canal tours. On this visit we wanted time to enjoy the location, the architecture, the walks, the parks, the restaurants and bars. We did enjoy all of these, but we particularly enjoyed a nearby restaurant associated with Bed & Guide named Nel. We enjoyed superb service, food and a memorable night -thanks to Dennis and Youssef!
We arrived in Amsterdam for four nights as our first stop of a month long trip to Europe.
We were greeted by Dennis as our cab pulled up in front of the apartment. As my title of the review indicates, staying at the Bed and Guide is like staying at a friend's home. We stayed in the first floor apartment. It is a split level. The first floor is a living dining area and a kitchenette. The kitchenette was well equipped with everything one would need for independent living/cooking. Downstairs was the bedroom and bathroom. The bedroom opened up to a beautiful garden and outdoor sitting area. The apartment is a on a quiet street so night noise was no issue, but is conveniently located so that everything of interest is within walking distance. Dennis was the perfect host. Easily accessible for advise and assistance, but never intrusive. He also proved to be a fabulous guide of both the city, and and extended day trip we took with him. As others have mentioned, a morning basket appears each AM of bakery treats, and upon arrival our fridge was packed with variety of savory treats ! The apartment was spotless, tastefully decorated and very comfy. Treat yourself if you visit Amsterdam and stay at the Bed and Guide - we are sure thrilled we did !
B&B Guide is a fantastic place to stay in Amsterdam. An excellent alternative to a hotel, both apartments are spacious; ours was with the added bonus of a private garden, which was a great luxury. Immaculately clean. Very comfortable bed. Dennis and Martine are lovely people. A boat trip with a history lesson was an unexpected pleasure included in the price of the room. If you’ve never been to Amsterdam this is the place to book. We hope to be back.
My husband and I just returned from 3 days at the Bed & Guide. We had a delightful stay mainly due to the warm hospitality we received from Dennis & Martine. The best way to describe our experience was that from the moment we reserved our room it felt as if we were going to Amsterdam to visit close friends. We received several e-mails prior to our trip with helpful information about navigating the city (where to park, which train to take, etc.). When we arrived we found Dennis waiting to greet us at the front door. That evening Dennis gave recommendations for dinner and tips for navigating the city. The next morning he took us on a private 2 hour boat tour of Amsterdam (see pictures). It was such an enjoyable way to experience the city - traveling with a local vs. a crowded tour boat. The apartment was clean and comfortable with everything we needed for a comfortable stay. Once again it felt as if we were visiting friends that were right next door if we needed anything. The location was ideal on a quaint street with lots of little shops and restaurants.
My husband and I just returned from a 7 day stay at the Bed & Guide. We were in the Suite. The smaller of the two apartments. Although there is only a small kitchenette (with hotplate type stove) the garden more than makes up for it. Dennis and Martine are wonderful hosts. I asked a lot of questions during our walkabout tour ( the boat was unavailable to us). Dennis happily answered everyone. It did get a little warm while we were there but the bedroom is down stairs below ground level so it stayed nice a cool for a good nights sleep. The WC and shower are very modern. The refrigerator was well stocked with good food. Martine delivered fresh bread every morning. She even brought over our bread wrapped to go on the morning we left early for a day trip to Belgium. The apartment had only been in use for a couple of months while we were there so they were still working out some issues. However, this was never a problem. They had bikes for our use at no additional charge. The apartment has a private entrance with your own key. No curfew. Dennis and Martine are right next door should you need anything. We changed our travel plans at the last moment and when they couldn't let us stay due to being booked Martine went online and found us a place to stay. She contacted the owners of another B&B and made the reservation for us. Dennis even drove us to the new place! This other B&B (which I will review separately) was not even close to the level of the Bed & Guide. Dennis and Martine speak several languages so no worries if you speak English,Spanish or even German! Try to go to Dennis and Martine's pub Nel while you are there. Monday is Jazz night with great live music.
