Hotel Pharo is an old historic building ... I accept that, so I was not expecting a large modern room, but I did expect it to provide clean and safe rooms.
There is no elevator ... reception is up a winding staircase on the first floor. All the rooms are up one or two floors. Seventy steps to reach our room ... 70 old unlevel narrow steps ... carrying our bags.
The room was small even though it was a “comfort twin”. Paint and plaster were chipping off in big chunks, the toilet door had swollen to the point it would not close, the shower was moldy. I’ve added pictures.
I can accept the difficulties of running a hotel in an old building, but there should be NO excuse for the lack of simple maintenance, improper cleaning leaving visible mold, the inadequate treatment of old stairways making them dangerous, particularly when you are dragging your bags up 70 or more steps. Don’t stay here. There are far better choices at about the same price. the first floor. All the rooms are up one or two floors. We arrived with two friends of mine late in the evening to the hotel and the receptionist told us that our booking was invalid. We had booked a room for 3 but the receptionist told us that we had to take 2 rooms and that the price would jump from 45e to 129e. This was well beyond our budget but we didn't have the time nor energy to seek another hotel. We managed to haggle the price to 70e for us three which was perfectly acceptable. Otherwise the room was tidy enough with a small bathroom. If the incident with the bookings hadn't left such a foul taste in my mouth I would probably have given this hotel 3 stars.

This is definetly worst place I've ever slept, and I have visited a lot of hotels. I'm pretty sure that, not so long ago, it was one of those places where you can "rent a room by the hour". So much mold smell on one place I have never seen. Only reason why I hav stayed there, was do to some kind of conference in Marseille, so all other hotels were booked.

We arrived at the hotel very late on Sept 11, therefore, it would have really been Sept 12. We said that we wanted to pay for our room for both nights at that point so we would have to worry about it. Our confirmation stated it was 170 euro (85/night) for 2 nights but we were charged 172.18 euro (86.09/night) because of the city tax. We paid the full amount. On the 13th of Sept we left and handed in our keys. We left our bags in the hotel after we checked out to see a bit more of the city. At no point did anyone mention that we owed money.
I received my creditcard statement the following month and saw that there was a charge for one night at the hotel. I phoned to find out what happened and all I was told was that I didn't pay for both nights. I explained the situation and asked why they would have let me leave without asking me to pay if I had not. They said they must have made a mistake and entered my cash payment of 86.09 for 2 nights when that is the price of one. I said that was wrong for i had made a cash payment of 170 euro -- the mistake was that they entered the wrong amount. Unfortunately I do not have my receipt. I threw it out not thinking there would be a problem for I've never had a problem like this. The hotel has no record of me signing for the room -- obviosuly not if i was charged for my stay on the 13th on the 26th of Sept. They will not credit the money to my card.
BE VERY CAREFUL IF YOU ARE TO STAY HERE -- THEY MAY OVERCHARGE YOU!!!

This hotel provided my partner and I with wonderful accommodation in Marseille, very convinient to public transport and walking distance to the coastline and the beach.

Welcomed warmly by the staff, we easily checked in before the advertised check in time and were shown a good sized double room with ensuit. Facing the street we were plesently surprised by the lack of road noise as the soundproofing worked well. Whilst the room as airconditioned, it did get a little stuffy at night, but the windows could be opened to allow the coast air in.

The bus stop with direct links to the Old Port is right outside the hotel and both buses 83 and 81 take about 8mins to get you to the Old Port. From there, you can change to the Metro and reach all major tourist sites and locations.

To travel to the hotel from the main train station, take the Metro Line 1 to Vieux Port. From there, exit the Metro station and get the 83 bus from the stop to the left of the port. If you stand facing the water with your back to the Quick fast food resturant, the bus stop is accross the road to your left. The hotel is about 5 stops along the route, at Place 4 Septembre.

Overall the hotel was a great place to stay for our long weekend. The transport links made it easily accessible, and even after the buses stop running, the Hotel is only a 20min walk from the Port.
