It was a long motorcycle ride so we were getting tired. We stopped at the top of Clifton Hill to look on the internet for a place to stay but service was spotty. We were near the Cavalier Motel so we decided to walk over and check it out since we prefer motels with parking right outside our door. We booked 2 nights and regret set in only moments later. Our room (#18) was in a back corner through a metal door with zero view or access to the parking lot. Perhaps Mr. Owner didn't understand us because English was barely his second language. (I now think he did it on purpose.) Regardless, the room had not been cleaned yet so we waited outside a little bit. There was no indication that anyone was coming so I walked back to the office to inquire what time our room would be ready. Mrs. Owner reassigned us to a "better bigger room" (#28) again in the same back corner, through a metal door, with zero view of the parking lot, only now up the stairs. It was not better nor was it bigger, but it was certainly hair-raising.
We immediately checked out the bed to look for bed bugs or roaches. Nothing jumped out at me but I had my doubts that the sheets had even been changed. In all of our travels, this has been the only place I've ever wanted to sleep with my clothes on. Let me take you on a room tour: Bathroom sink: no hot water, but at least there was running water. Shower: didn't even consider it since the water shot out the side of the nozzel, not the front. Toilet: came off the wall every time I sat down, but at least it flushed. Towels: only 2 small rough bath towels (pretty sure my husband has these in the garage to mop up oil spills, no lie!) No hand towels, no face cloths. Watch your step into the sleeping area because the floor is two different heights and it's dark and unmarked. It tripped us literally every time. Bed: matress was wrapped in plastic and is original with the year of the building. The bedframe was wooden boards that we stubbed our toes on, again literally every time. We put our sneakers on the corners to keep us from stubbing our toes if we got up in the night. Pillows: OMG. About 2" thick and hard as a rock. Probably original and made up of years of dust mites and shed skin. Don't ask for more than the 2 on the bed as your request will be denied. However, they were nicely monogrammed "Cavalier Motel" with black magic marker (aka Sharpie, for you young folks). The TV was old fashioned but that was the least of our problems. Shockingly, the microwave to share was in the parking lot, outside, in the rain, and plugged in. Is this even legal?
I was so utterly beside myself with this place that we just had to leave. It tainted the whole experience of Niagara Falls and I could not bring myself to stay the 2nd night that was paid for. And I hate to waste money, so you can imagine how bad it was. We packed up and left town first thing in the morning. No refunds. Mr. Owner sure did know how to point to his sign and say "office policy." Hospitality is not their strong suit. Why they are in the business is beyond me. They seem to hate it and take it out on their customers who provide their livelihood. If you choose to stay here, I sincerely hope you enjoy your accommodations. We will never ever be back.
