This was my 2nd trip to this hotel, previously stayed in April 2018. Within the year this hotel drastically went downhill.
Was 3.5 star and dropped to 2.5 star.
The food sucks ... Everywhere. Even the snack bar sucked.
No 24 hour bar?
Disco is dead and NOT FREE for Allegro guests.
TOO MANY KIDS IN SWIM UP BAR ... Splashing and blocking the bar. Ban them ... Make them use the other 3 pools.
The rooms are covered in mold and have bugs.
Too many RUDE locals who push their way through and butt in front of you.
If you aren't Cuban you can forget about being served at the pool bar.
I will never stay here again and I will make sure everyone knows how garbage this place is.
I chose this hotel based on price and it's location off Calle 1 in Varadero. The Palma Real had several problems serious enough that I probably wouldn't use them again: No hot water the whole time I was there- lukewarm at best and that was the whole time I was there. Sewage smell sometimes coming out of the floor drain in the bathroom. No mini bar stocked with a beer or two- just a bottle of water daily. No decent alchohol - I asked for a Havana club and they said they had none and showed me a pale cheap rum as the best one they had. I asked for a mojito instead and they said they had no mint so no mojitos. I didn't see anyone with a mojito the whole week. I bought a decent bottle of rum at the store and had that in my room in the evenings. Except for filling a bubba on tap, which I don't do, you had to pay 1.25 CUC for a bottle of Crystal. I was in block 4 in room 4105. The room smelled super moldy when I arrived, and black mold was on the walls in places. During the week, believe it or not, several spots on the wall started flaking and a day or two later, white fluffy mold started growing- it looked like cotton candy! The air circulation was always running and when I removed the thermostat cover, it was non functional inside- everything was disconnected. The room was much too cold in the evenings and on two night I used a blanket. The air conditioning was also loud so I had to use ear plugs to sleep. The food was adequate and I ate well enough at the buffet bar. The staff were all great and hard working and did their best with the resources they had to work with. Except for the room problems, I did enjoy my trip and the central location was great for shopping and sight seeing. The grounds and pool area are well maintained and I spent a couple of days poolside. Probably not my choice again, but it could be if the maintenance and bar issues were addressed.
I can't believe some reviewers. If you want a 5* resort pay more and go there. Allegro is a pretty decent place, a bit old but for the price we paid we got even more (around 58 euros a day for the 2 of us, with a sea view). The room is clean, the beach is beautiful, the beach bar is also great. I'm a vegetarian and I wasn't hungry at all, my spouse says the meat was great (fish, poultry, pork and chicken-all of it). The pools look nice but no one uses them because the beach is so great. Chairs are also included in the price, as well as drinks and food at the beach. The drink selection is modest but ok, You can also choose out of 6-7 kinds of coffee. Yes, sometimes you have to wait a few minutes to get served but it's ok. Our bed was huuuuuge.
Sometimes you can see drunk Russians who embarrass themselves but I don't see how is that a hotel's fault? Sometimes the guests are terrible, they drink the Irish coffee at 9am and because it takes time to make it and to put Bailey's in it they make the line, it's not the stuff fault.
If you're on a budget or you just don't want to spend a fortune on a hotel this is the right place for you. I would most certainly come back.
This was my 6th time staying at this hotel. I have to say that if I believed all the negative reviews, I would not have stayed here. It makes me mad when this hotel gets a negative reputation over the outlandish claims I've read in a lot of the latest reviews. It's sad some people won't go to the Palma Real because of that.
First off, the ladies at reception were all very nice and helpful and quick with their jobs. We had no problem with them at all. Sometimes there are a lot of people waiting in line to check in so of course we had to wait a bit of time to exchange money or get an internet card. That's normal and the people who get mad about it are self-centred jerks. Get over it and realize you're no better than anyone else.
The food at the buffet was very good. The breakfasts were the best. The omlettes were amazing as was the egg quiches they had laid out. The bread was fresh and amazing as always. I saw a review that said they were hard as hockey pucks. That never happened on my visit.
The real bacon was very good. It wasn't crispy as some liked so you just simply need to take some to the chef and he will happily cook them more for you. The chef at the flat-top grille was very good at his job and was always friendly and full of smiles.
The servers were all great! Always quick to get us a table and always had our drinks ready for us by the time we filled our plates at the buffet. I read reviews where they said they were lazy and always rolling their eyes at people who asked for a knife and fork to eat. Because of those reviews I deliberately watched them work and to see how they acted towards the tourists. All I saw was courteous friendly service all done with a smile. I had three different servers this trip and all three treated us superbly well.
The bad reviews would have been better served about the tourists, some of who treated the workers like they were personal servants. Rude as hell. But the workers must be used to it because all they did was smile and continue with their jobs. I have nothing but great things to say about the servers. Be wary of the negative reviews about them.
The swim - up bar was still closed but I was told my the bartender is should be ready before the end of the year. We saw some workers working on the tiles so it looks like they're preparing to get it ready for opening.
The pool was fantastic. I read a review saying the water was green. I was worried because it was a recent review. All we saw then we arrived was clear water where you can see the bottom. No problems.
The lobby bar was great fun. The servers worked so hard to get all the drinks out. I've read reviews which say they're lazy and slow. Well, they certainly worked their butts off all week during my visit. And when it's very busy, of course it takes time to get your drinks. Think rush hour traffic. Things take time when it's busy.
All in all, the trip was awesome as usual. Don't listen to the bad reviews and make your own opinion.
This is our 4th time at Palma Real and we found it to be satisfactory. We were quite worried after reading the recent reviews so here is my opinion.
The room was fine. It was clean. No bugs. There were no real issues other than the water was off twice(each time less then 30 min). The bedding and towels were clean. Our maid was fantastic and cleaned the room immaculately everyday.
The grounds were lovely and staff were put everyday trimming trees, mowing and starting repairs on the swim up pool.
The lobby was clean, well staffed other then mojitos, some mixes and vodka not available a couple of days.( we just go down the road and buy a bottle for 3CUC.) Coffee was fresh and available every morning.
The other pools were very clean and we had no issues. The snack bar was open from 10am til late evening with food available all the time. No lack of drinks. Staff were wonderful.
Block1 is in the process of reopening and the swim up pool is to be reopened mid/late Dec.
The buffets were fine except for the guests that were pushy, rude and glutons.( the race to their favourite dishes were laughable) . we did not lack for anything. We do not eat seafood so I can give no opinion on that. They had everything that we required. The tables were cleaned. ( Seen many reviews of dirty tables, dishes left on them, food that smelled bad(not sure how they came to that conclusion) and rude staff) We never saw anything close to this. The staff were readily available and always topped our drinks and checked on us during our meals.
We will continue to go there and enjoy the beauty of Varadero❤
