I've been to Vegas 4 times as a couple (twice) and with friends (twice) so I'll try to give you a rough idea of what I've found good and anything to avoid (in my experience). I hope it helps you enjoy yourself more. There is literally hundreds of things to see and do. If you get bored, blame yourself not Vegas, it's Awesome !

Neilly1967's City Tips

  • Don't take Clothes, take extra Money and go to the North or South Outlets and buy them there, especially if you're a Brit. The Designer Labels are so cheap. Check their websites before you go.
  • Remember to Tip if you are happy with the service as Waitresses, Room Cleaners, Service Staff are paid very poorly. Tip the Barstaff especially and you will likely be 'rewarded' with bigger drinks and better overall service. You are generally looking at $1 per drink for Barstaff, 15% for a Meal and $2s for each room 'valet' from the Maid (although she tends to get all my change at the end as well which amounts to quite a bit).
  • Attractions and Shows are a Big Must when you are in Las Vegas. See all the freebies such as the Strip Itself, The Bellagio Fountains, The Volcano at the Mirage, The Light Show in Freemont Street and\or pay for a Trip to the Hoover Dam or the Grand Canyon. There are many different Trips available from Helicopters over the Strip to Horse Riding in the Desert. Also pay to go to a show such as The Jersey Boys at Paris which was excellent. Look for the Tix 4 Tonight Booths to get a deal on Show Tickets and much more.
  • If you're a Gambling Novice, go to the Old Town as the Tables are cheaper. Most Hotel Casinos have Free Lessons available (usually earlier in the morning) for their Tables. The majority of Casinos have a Poker Room but they vary in price per Tournament (and probably standard of play) depending on where they are. If you're looking for a 'decent' Tournament, pay more and go to The Venetian or Ceasars but if you just want a Cash Game most Casinos will accomodate you.
  • There are literally hundreds of places to eat and drink on the Strip both inside and outside of the Casinos. If you drink in the Large Strip Casinos you will definately pay a premium although there are many happy hours (usually in the afternoon) for you to take advantage of. I find the Bars and Casinos in the Old Town are cheaper if you wnat a few in between gambling and sightseeing. You can however buy alcohol from a shop and walk around the hotel, casino or the Strip itself which came as a surprise the first time. I'm not going to recomend any Bars as such as this is a personal choice. Check the internet for happy Hours \ Bar Reviews before travelling and you can't go wrong. Eating in Las Vegas is amazing and one of my favourate parts of visiting. You can get anything ! Each of the larger Hotels\Casinos have a Food Court for quick eats such as Pizza, Burgers, Baguettes, Chinese, Hot Dogs, Pretzels, etc. The Hotels will also have a number of their own 'Themed' Restuarants which you can visit. There is also a Buffet in every Hotel which, again, you should check the reviews for before travelling. These are generally well worth the money and provide a vast selection of food and drink for you to enjoy. There are, on the Strip, a lot of 'standalone' places to eat. The selection is almost endless from price to food types so you will be spoilt for choice. I'll give you a couple of recomendations but the list is endless : Ri Ra (Mandalay Bay) for Breakfast and Drinks, Stripburger (at the Fashion Show Mall) for a Burger and Cheap Drinks, Maggianos (above Stripburger) for Italian Cuisine, Triple George Grill (Old Town) for Steaks and Chayo (The Linq) for Mexican Food and Drinks. Remember that your tip may be already added to the bill.
  • Transportation is abundant with Taxis, Limo's, Monorails and Buses. I was a frequent user of the Buses to go up and down the Strip. These are called the Ace and the Deuce. The Ace is the quick single-decker but doesn't stop at every stop whereas the Deuce (double-decker) tends to stop at every 2nd Casino. Both go (approx) from the Old Town to the South Shopping Mall and are very regular and reliable (every 15 minutes approx). You can buy 1 Journey, Return, 24 Hour ($8) or 3 Day Passes ($20) for the Buses. They are also Air Conditioned so you're glad to get on them. Check the Maps of where each of the Buses go. http://www.lasvegas-how-to.com/strip-downtown-express.php The Monorails tend to be more a 'try it once' type of thing as they are generally located at the back of the Casinos (with the exception of the Excaliber - Luxor - Mandalay Bay one) and you seem to wait a while on them. Taxis are reasonably cheap and fast. However, the Taxi Driver will likely have some distant family connection with your Country and will 'butter you up' for a better tip. Limos are fairly cheap as well so consider getting one if there are 6 or more of you as you can negotiate your price with the driver. Overall, I'd give the Transport in Vegas a 'Thumbs Up'.
  • Take time to sit by a pool and relax to recharge the batteries, Vegas is NOT a relaxing holiday. You will be on the go 'permanently' (for 24 hours if you want to).
  • Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate ! Remember you are in the Middle of a Desert !!!!! Use the Water Sellers on the Strip ($1 a bottle) and Stock Up on the Gatorade. Keep Drinking or it will spoil your Holiday. This IS the Most Important Tip I can give you !!!!!!
  • For Vegas 'tat' and gifts, etc go to the Grand Canyon Shop near the MGM Grand.
  • Go see the "Welcome to Las Vegas" Sign about 1\4 mile down from the Mandalay Bay.
  • Explore it to the Max, I've still only Scratched the Surface. These are only a few of the places I've been as a quick 'fix'.
