mranola's City Tips

  • Littering is strictly prohibited here. If you are caught, a fine of HK$1,500.00 should be paid, plus you need to attend a court.
  • Smoking is not allowed in most bars, restaurants, shopping venues, and parks. But if you really need to light up, ask a waiter, or a police, as to where there is a smoking area, where you can smoke. There are still some reserved spaces for smokers. Smoking in a non smoking area, if caught, would mete you a fine of HK$5,000.00, plus you need to attend a court hearing.
  • Better be safe and look both ways in crossing the streets, as Hong Kong follows the British style than the American style. So better look right first, then left, to see oncoming traffic. There has been reported accidents, as people tend to look left first before right on crossing the street. Better yet, wait for the walk sign before crossing. Also avoid jaywalking. If caught jaywalking an initial fine of HK$300.00 should be paid, plus you need to attend a court hearing.
  • Tipping is not necessary, but is welcome. Plus tipping might give you a little extra once you come back to the same place.
  • The most convenient way to move around the city, would be using the Mass Transport Railway System or better know as the MTR. It would be better to buy a tourist store value ticket, than buying at the ticketing kiosk.
