Athina1_12's City Tips

  • A one-day travelpass makes getting around by public transport economical, and can be used on buses, metro and trolley.
  • The best way to get around is on foot. Who knows what hidden gems you may find in the side alleys of Plaka, for example?
  • Drink plenty of water! Bottled mineral water can be bought cheaply from the small kiosks dotted around the city.
  • There are countless coffee shops and tavernas all over the city, where you can stop and rest your weary feet during or after a hard day's shopping.

The most famous shopping street in Athens! Running from Syntagma (Constitution) Square right down to Monastiraki, Ermou Street is home to a huge range of shops, from clothes stores such as H&M, Zara and even a big Marks and Spencer, to the more traditional Greek stores selling locally made beauty products.

    Tips
    • Stop in at Tiger towards the Monastiraki end of Ermou. Whilst not offering much in the way of Greek goods, it does offer an array of fun home and office products at great prices.
    • In the middle of Ermou Street is Ag. Kapnikarea – Saint Mary's Church. A great place to sit and rest in peace.

A great place to see where the locals head to for fresh meat, fish, fruit, vegetables, cheeses, sweets plus Greek herbs and spices – no shopping trip to Athens would be complete without browsing the stalls at Central Market.

    Tips
    • Wear closed shoes. The ground can get a little slippery, especially in the fish section.
    • Eat in one of the no-frills ouzeries located in the market. You may have to wait in line for a place to eat, but it's a great opportunity to really get down with the locals.
    • You can't leave without trying the patsas soup. Not for the faint-hearted, it's made of bull or lamb's stomach lining and feet! Great as a hangover cure though...

There's a whole array of goods to browse here, from clothing and arts to traditionally Greek made products such as soaps and honey. On a Sunday, when some of the stores are closed, there's more of a flea market feel, with locals opening up street stalls filled with any manner of things, from junk to household goods to antiques. Your best bet for a Greek bargain!

Amongst the busy tourist streets at the base of the Acropolis, meander around this area of souvenir shops. Whilst you'll find plenty of ubiquitous t-shirts and bags, you'll also find unique Greek marble busts, leather shoes and my favourite – mosaic dishes and lights – if you look carefully enough.

    Tips
    • Plaka is great for getting lost in and for finding random shops down small, cobbled alleys.
    • When tired of all the walking and shopping, do as the Greeks do and take a 3-hour coffee break in one of the many cafes.
