The hotel is ideally located for all the main sights in Venice. Additionally, it has amazing views from both the restaurant, and , if you choose well, the room. There is also a roof garden, although this became incredibly expensive on New Year's Eve, as it had a prime position to see the fireworks, without the crowds! The restaurant looks out on to the canals, it's a lovely location. They have a dinner option for New Year, and the rooftop is an added extra for about 250 euros. Yes, to sit on the rooftop.

Very centrally located as it's a stone's throw from St Marks Basilica. It's always very crowded, and there are limited seats at the back. If you sit down, it's waiter service, however, if you order at the counter, it's take away. A very good, interesting selection of sandwiches.

I would advise you book a tour online before you go. The tour is a must, as it takes you to the offices of the palace, where a sort of secret service operated. All fascinating, and there is a torture chamber too! The tour also takes you across the Bridge of Sighs. A big bonus is that the tour takes you out on to the main staircase, so that you can then continue to look around the palace without paying entrance charge.

A magnificent basilica, improbably perched on the sea! Well, that's how it seems, anyway. Go, before it all sinks into the water, it's perilously damp a lot of the time as it is! Also if it rains, you will find yourself walking on trestle tables to get into the church! First, book a guided tour online before you go. Otherwise, you'll find yourself queueing for ages, trooping around a dark church, and out the other side. The tour guide takes you to the Sacristy, the jewel Room, and the tomb of St Mark's remains. The guide also makes sure you are in the church at exactly the right time for the ceiling to light up, this is only done at certain times of the day, and you can see the gold leaf and the paintings in all their beauty, until the lights go out again.

We came on new Year's Day, one of the few galleries that was open. We were served a lovely aperitif on the terrace, overlooking the Grand Canal. The museum is a gem, full of interesting modern art, quite small, but a lot of Dali, Kandinsky and Picasso. There is a grave of every one of Peggy's beloved dogs, in the garden. A must- see

A total, total delight. We went on New Year's Day in the evening. A little difficult to find, as tucked away, and you are stumbling over tiny bridges, but they signpost and there are staff waiting to guide you in. Doesn't matter how you dress. Dress warm! It's a big draughty Palazzo. If you get there early you can place yourself right in the action- or you can just sit back and enjoy the opera, set in several sumptious rooms, beautifully lit.A fabulous evening. Also, the American Bar, just a stone's throw away, is a good venue for a pre- opera drink. A big plus, they serve free bar snacks when you order the drinks. If you didnt have time to eat before the show, those snacks are very, very generous.

St Mark's Square is the central hub, everything is located here, the Duke's Palace, the Campanile and St Mark's basilica. At first sight, it takes the breath away. At New Year, it's really busy. On New Year's Eve, crowds of people gather at the Grand Canal, you have to stake a plot and wait, basically. Take something to drink as you wait. The fireworks take place on the opposite side of the Grand Canal, either on a boat or smaller island, I'm not sure. Afterwards, it's a bit scary trying to head back, due to the narrow streets and the immense, pushing crowd. No supervision, and it gets frightening when the pushing is coming from all sides. We did get a bit crushed, and had to find a small space to get our breath back- not easy. Hotels will all offer views of the fireworks from various vantage points, but it will cost you, lots. The Gritti Palace with a balcony over the Grand Canal would be ideal! Don't forget to try out the various cafes and resturants in the square, but obviously they are far more expensive in such a prime location. It floods regularly in the winter. The sea,it feels very close here!
