Zona Arqueologica Teotihuacan Questions & Answers

Wharton, Texas

We plan on going to visit from Michoacán this July. What are the best days of the week to visit and are there any hotels you would recommend in the area? Also, if we are arriving by bus, would they drop us off at the site itself or do they take you to a nearby town? We are fiat time visitors so any information would help. Thanks in advance.

We were scheduled to stay at Villas Arqueologicas but the plans changed because a wedding was scheduled just before we arrived and it was thought we'd get a better night's sleep at Murals Poblenos which was a short van ride away. Since the company I used (Far Horizons) is quite particular and you want to walk, by all means stay at Villas Arqueologicas, it looked charming. Yes you can stay in Mexico City but for maximum time, and you'll want it, stay at Villas Arqueologicas. Not sure what would be the best day but I'd suggest you plan two days with one being Sunday as entry is free that day. One of our days was Sunday and it wasn't all that crowded. Go early.

We stayed at the Villas Arqueologicas which are just about 10 mins walk from the main gates to the Pyramids. Really nice place (considering location) restaurant staff are very helpful, reception staff not so.

There are several 'gates' so if you do just go for the day make sure you remember which gate you got dropped and are being picked up. I don't know where Michoacán is so not sure where you would be coming from but I am guessing the bus will still stop at the Pyramids rather than the town (or both). The town is about 10 mins away in a taxi. But if you are staying at the Villas the bus may well go past the Villas enroute to the town so they should be able to drop you right outside where you can drop your bags then walk to the pyramids.

Buses are really good in Mexico, very modern, comfortable, reclining seats, a/c, movies (though very old) but great to sit by the window and watch everything go by. They run very much on time, the bus stations are usually large and clean. One thing we did find (and this was not just bus stations, it was hotels etc) the information provided was often incorrect. So always double check times and gates and never rely on information you find on websites (bus operational time tables). One of our party was Mexican and the others spoke varying levels of Spanish, so it was not us misunderstanding it was us being given the wrong information.

There are a number of local restaurants past the Villas hotel - the hotel restaurant is not particularly cheap but I'm sure the other restaurants would have been a lot cheaper and a lot more fun - we didn't realise they were there until the day we left!

I am told the weekends get very busy because locals visit for the day/s, so best to avoid those if you can.

Yes it can get very hot during the day, so head off early - also avoids queues. Make sure you have water though there is a little snack bar and shop where you can buy water and food. There are also souvenir shops of course and of course the artisans selling their wares - the prices get cheaper the further you get in and of course the prices are negotiable (I found the started out with prices the same or higher than they had in the shops, but they are good natured, often speak some English, and have a good sense of humour if you have some fun with them).

Take plenty of cash, there was an ATM at the pyramids (hotel reception told us the nearest one was in the town), however we visited during equinox and the machine was empty - not sure how often it gets replenished, but running out of cash was a pain - there is one in the town but our taxi driver (taking us back to the airport) couldn't find it, local drivers probably know exactly where it's tucked away.

We didn't use a guide, though we did find official ones scattered around inside, most of the plaques were in Spanish and English so we were able to read those (and also listened to guides here and there when we were wandering around). We had read up quite a bit about them before we went.

Hope that helps, enjoy!

I agree that the day of the week isn't as important - but I'd avoid Sundays! For most local places like this around Mexico, it's locals day meaning local residents get in for free so all these sites are VERY popular on Sundays and a lot of families have the day off. I recommend going mid-week - we went on a Monday or Tuesday and we were super comfortable there. DEFINITELY arrive early. We got there at 9am and it was perfect. Not too hot, no sunburn, no over-crowding.

I wouldn't recommend staying in this area - it's a long way away from anywhere. We stayed in the centre of Mexico city and caught an uber to terminal norte and caught a bus from there. The bus was 104 pesos return (less than $6). The return ticket is open, meaning whenever you're finished just go back to where the bus drops you off at the front gates and get on the next bus back. They come every 20 or 30 minutes so don't worry about that. We walked around the site extensively, saw and read everything (we even had an audio tour) and we were there for 4 hours maximum. So head back to Mexico city and enjoy your afternoon/evening there as opposed to staying anywhere nearby - I wouldn't say you'd gain any value from staying nearby.

Have a great time!

I don't know which day is best. Time of day is likely to be more important. There's little or no shade and you might wish to avoid being at the Pyramids themselves.midday / early afternoon are best avoided. Get there as early in the morning as possible. Only use an official guide. They tend to locate themselves inside the main entrance to the site itself (not in the grounds outside)

Most people travel from Mexico City. We stayed in the Historic centre, where there is a good choice of hotels to suit most budgets.

Taking the public bus and it easy and offers best value. Take the metro to the Terminal Central del Norte. The metro stop is Autobuses del Norte and the Bus Terminal is outside.

The ticket Office for the bus that goes to the Pyramids is situated in the booth furthest to the left as you enter the station from the front. The bus drops off and picks up at the same point at the pyramids. Return times are printed on the ticket.
