How long would be the average visit to the old town area? Would one be able to visit the park and work in a visit to Virginia City that afternoon?

If you really love the history of the area and want to take the time to visit everything, including hiking up to the cemetery and seeing the area where they hanged the criminals, and read all the information, it would take at least four hours to go through Bannack.

The same goes for Nevada City and Virginia City. Nevada City can be done in four hours or less because it is very small. The only thing they have is the museum. And if you take your time and look at everything that alone will take at least two hours. Virginia City will take two days if you go through all the buildings, visit the stores, take a tour on the train, the fire engine, the stage coach and the 6 X 6 truck to hear about the history of the area and visit with the residents.

We were there a week and the only extra thing we visited, and weren't able to do everything there is the Big Hole Battlefield. We feel we need to go back for another visit to see the things we didn't have time for like the Lewis and Clark Caverns. Hope you enjoy your visit, We had a wonderful time for the most part.

You can do it in 2 hours or less. I would stop in Nevada City also, more to do than Virginia City. They have a train you can take to Virginia City to Nevada City. The train ride is a fun thing to do.

We visited in July. We took our time going through the buildings and surrounding area and it took us a 2 to 3 hours. My son works at the park so we got to see behind the scenes as well. After the tour we had lunch at the campgrounds and then headed to Bozeman. You may want to check out the website for Bannack because they have special events all year. My next trip will be for the Ghost Walk in the fall. I'm not sure how far Virginia City is from Bannack. I hope you enjoy your visit. My favorite was the doctor's house.

Bannack at this time off year will not be fun! Unless you enjoy 4 to 6 hours of walking from building to building, not to mention climbing boot hill, and visiting the grave yard, a few miles away in VERY COLD weather. No heat except at park entrance. Climbing the stairs to the Masonic hall may be a challenge too, if any ice is present...

Time wise even in good weather, spring or fall you need 2 days to enjoy both. Especially if you have not visited before!

I don't think so. We spent an entire afternoon, maybe a little longer, at each location. But definitely, see both and take your time! We visit both again each time we're there. Have a great vacation!

I believe it would be difficult to do both in one day considering the travel time. as always it is the visitors interest in the site that determines the correct amount of time needed. Bannack is a great historic site and would strongly suggest you visit and like the previous response I would encourage you to stay at the Nevada City Hotel. they also have historic cabins out back that are very nice (we stayed in both). Virginia City is only 2 miles from Nevada city

Bannack is totally worth a visit. I would suggest you get there when it opens, spend a few hours, then drive to Virginia City and spend the night (or vice versa). There are two charming, historic hotels (one is in Nevada City) that are a great experience. Top it off with dinner at the Wells Fargo Steakhouse!
