Hi, I've been to Venice about 10 times now and stayed at a variety of locations including Maestre and several hotels around San Marco etc. I've also visited the Lido and Guidecca but not stayed there. I haven't been for the Redentore festival but saw a documentary about it so I know what it's about so my suggestion would be to stay around San Marco. Maestre has cheaper accommodation but it has the drawback of a long commute. Trains and vaporetti are frequent but by the time you add the 15min train journey and then catch a water bus down to San Marco you can easily add on another 45 mins or more especially if you catch a number 1, which stops at pretty much every stop. A number 2 is a bit quicker as fewer stops. Don't forget the buses stop early in the day because watercraft are prohibited from the main canals once the firework barges are in place and they're policed strictly. The Lido is also a bit of a commute and a bit far out. The end of the Guidecca nearest San Giorgio is probably a reasonable bet but it still requires water transport to see the main part of the city. I think your best bet is around San Marco, the Riva degli Schiavoni, Arsenale and Salute church. As far as hotels go we've stayed in the Splendid 5 times and they've just put a large roof terrace in, which you can see San Marco campanile from, which is about 300m away. Any rooftop vantage point should be good I'd imagine. It's a bit pricey but worth it - it's a great hotel. Hope this helps. Enjoy your trip.Disarmingly Charming.
