Going to Borneo last week of September. Is it worth going to Mabul if you cannot get a permit for Sipadan?
Also, three in our group need to get Open Water certification while I get Advanced. Is it much better getting certified off Mabul than in KK?
Hi there. Go to Mabul yes, but if you did not pre-book your Sipadan permit it IS possible to still dive in Sipadan by getting a permit on the spot.
Unfortunately, Scuba Junkie is not the best option to provide a Sipadan permit for walk ins because they ARE a popular dive shop *however* they do not have more permits than other dive operators. Hence, the number of divers:permit ratio is not the best - I booked my dives with them 2 months in advance.
From talking with locals, these dive operators were able to provide Sipadan diving permits for walk ins:
- Seaventures Dive Rig (needs a minimum number of days diving with them)
- Borneo Speedy Dive
Hope this helps.
Mabul and kapalai have wonderful diving!! KK can be good but I've found it's hit and miss depending on weather conditions and currents. It's just a question of pricing and available funds after that.
My good friend Mel works for Scuba junkie on mabul. Ask for him, he's the best and tell him Gen sent you
