Definitely not as good as pre Covid cruises, and having done at least 5 I think I have got the hang of cruising by now. Good points first, cabin was ok, looked after by staff very well, helpful but not intrusive. Food in 47 was good but only small portions, Fish and chips on deck 9 were a treat. The ABBA night show was excellant but the rest were just average and the so called comedian was truelly aweful. The not so good. Why were all the travel documents not inspected at the home departure airport. For 6 weeks prior, new emails demanded extra documents and certification yet none of this was checked until Palma, a very very bad idea. Why at every port were security checks in place as many as 4 times for the same thing, with ship security being very officious on shore and at entry. The French port staff simply gave up and let everyone through without any checks when they saw the queue. The Island restaurant needs a complete shake up, food not topped up or inspected regularly, decaff coffee luke warm every day, seat arrangements totally wrong when the 47 closes too early. Cheeky comments about why we were 10 minutes early for a transfer bus when we should have listened to the 'announcements', except of course there wernt any announcements. Considering the costs involved we were less than impressed this year with what we found.

Plenty of cruises behind us now to be able to give a balanced appraisal, and I would suggest that this review is read alongside my review of the Explorer 2 as there were only 9 days between both cruises. You wouldn’t think that these cruises were provided by the same company. There was a fantastic friendly atmosphere throughout the ship, with the crew going out of their way to ensure that guests were well catered for. Our cabin team of Yasa +2 on deck 8 were amazing. All of the waiters in 47 restaurant worked tirelessly with a special mention to Dwi and Joel on station 8 who went the extra distance. The food quality was top drawer as always. The entertainment was fantastic, with all performers being strong. In fact every one was better than on the Explorer 2, even the Cruise Director Franky was head and shoulders better than the Explorer 2. More visible and more entertaining too. The shows were brilliant, especially Rockology and Cogs. The headliner act was Brian Connolly jr (his late father was in the 70s band The Sweet), delivered two exceptionally good shows. The solo acts Marcelo, Arron and Saphy were excellent as were the two resident bands 4 tunes and The Collective. Yes they repeated a lot of songs, but then again we watched them many times around the pool deck or in the Live Room which had a great atmosphere, we were there every evening. We didn’t need to use the Squid and Anchor or the Atrium bar as our chosen venues to relax were fine for us. The Glass House served up great food at lunchtime as did the Snack Shack. We relied on these to save us having to lunch in 47 or Islands even though they were available. We didn’t choose to dine in any of the speciality restaurants, but we do know that they had sold out by the second night so must have been good. We heard a couple complaining to reception about people not dressing well enough for dinner……who cares!!! If you want to see dress codes enforced then book a more expensive cruise. There were other so called rules that weren’t adhered to such as children using the hot tubs, and sun beds being left unused for long periods. As far as I’m concerned these are trivial issues. The cruise was brilliant from start to finish. Characters from the Cruise included the bass player from the Collective and also the singer/bass player from 4Tunes who led the band jam on the final night, she was a real entertainer. Also the ships environmental officer who approached us in the Coffee Port and spent a pleasant 15 minutes chatting to us. Our thanks also to Christopher a deck waiter on deck 10 who found my wife’s watch and handed it in to reception. The only negatives from us was an abrupt Security Officer who wasn’t very polite as we boarded the tender at VilleFranche. Also the Broad Street Shops were not as enticing as the Explorer 2. This cruise has restored my faith in Marella that was damaged some 9 days earlier

Marella discovery 2, what a fab ship, all the staff so friendly, cant do enough for you. Cabins cleaned 2/3 times a day, fresh towels, in the shape of very interesting animals might I add! Amazing! Entertainment team are all amazing, cruise director Frankie and Chloe were fab. All the team work very hard, food was amazing, one waiter in particular was great looked after us all week, Pierson, nothing too much trouble for him. I would recommend this ship to anyone, Tui are brilliant. Keep up the good work guys!! See you again soon, Jo & H 3787 xx

Just completedmy 3rd cruise with TUI/Marella (August 2022) and my second on the Marella Discover 2. Previous cruises were in 2019 and 2019. One of the best things about TUI cruises is how easy it is to arrange and organise everything. From the moment you arrive at the Airport (Edinburgh for me) until you return TUI organise all your travel arrangements and it is very stress free.

It is a very different experience from any other holidays, even all inclusive holidays. It is a massive operation of about 800 staff providing three meals, snacks and unlimited drink every day as well as various entertainment. You get to spend time both on the ship and on destinations you pass by, and you get to see and talk to people from different places. You can relax or you can go to a party on the ship. It is generally believed that it is a holiday type for retired or elderly people, which makes sense as everything is planned and very convenient; but if you go as you are younger (maybe not in your 20s but definitely late 30s) you will have a different experience.
