- TwixUKAberdeen, UK358 contributionsDriving from Rome to Puglia we had identified Castel Del Monte as a stop enroute. Glad we did.
Perched on a hilltop, the Castel is imposing over the surrounding countryside. With views towards the sea, itās a great place to visit without being a commercial crowded sight.Written 29 September 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - VadimMurmansk, Russia26,794 contributionsKnowing that the Cathedral is Norman, it is easy to fall into the illusion that it has been preserved since that time in its original form. However, the facade of the Cathedral is a stylization of the Romanesque style of the architect Federico Santacroce. XIX century. The Cathedral traces its history back to the turn of the IX-X centuries, when it was erected by the local feudal Lord Goffredo d'Altavilla. Using the right of the founder Altavilla buried his wife Emma. However, it is not the first in the ranking of notable relics of the Cathedral. The famous king Frederick II of Hohenstaufen buried his two wives here, his 2nd wife Yolanda of Brienne and his 3rd wife Isabella of England. Friedrich was not a bigamist. Yolanda died giving birth to the future king Conrad IV, and Isabella also died giving birth, but 13 years later. However, Friedrich buried them together, almost like Bluebeard. Those who want to see the Royal relics can go down to the crypt.Written 29 March 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
