Surrounded by clear blue waters, this once fever hospital now attracts tourists to marvel at its old ruins and to see the giant tortoises who now inhabit its shores.Written 9 February 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Spices, fruits and vegetables were fresh and colorful, the fish and meat department was smelly and a bit shocking for me. It’s worth a visit.Written 7 January 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- graham eBirkenhead, UK564 contributionsBetween the fort and the sea are the gardens. Tidy with plenty of shade and a children's play area. Plenty of seats under the leafy canopy to sip and cold drink and relax in the shade.
This place comes alive at night when the night market arrives, plenty of stalls selling food, gifts and goods.Written 14 February 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. A little over an hour of music, about six songs ranging in influence from Gujarati to Tamil, Bantu, Egyptian, Omani, Persian and I swear there was some Klezmer influence in there. Lovely music, spirited musicians. A little warm inside, bring water!Written 24 May 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Cindy HIndianapolis, IN15 contributionsThe museum is just 2 rooms at the end of a long row of tourist shops. There’s not a lot of actual display but Said’s passion for the life of Princess Salame, as well as his in-depth knowledge of Zanzibar history make this a great stop.
He obviously cares a great deal about both topics and it comes through.
File this under things we never learned in school (at least in the US), fascinating.Written 4 October 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It is a 3-story building located in Mizingani Road, on the seafront, between the House of Wonders and the Old Dispensary.
It stands on the site of the previous palace, that was destroyed in the Anglo Zanzibar war of 1896. The present palace was built in late 19th century to serve as a residence for the Sultan's family. After the Zanzibar Revolution, in 1964 it was formally renamed to People's Palace and used as a government seat. In 1994, it became a museum about the Zanzibari royal family and history.
It’s closed temporarily for renovations.Written 14 March 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
