I know I’m in the minority, but I think this hike was overrated. Admittedly, Waikiki isn’t my favorite part of the island, so walking to get a great view of a bunch of hotel buildings and condos along the coast wasn’t my thing. It was difficult for my young children as well, and it is very crowded. Go in the morning to avoid crowds and heat, and make sure you book online ahead of time or you might not be able to get in at the entrance. I will still give it 4 stars for cultural significance because it is so beloved, and it was great to say we did it. One and done for my family though.

I had a self guided tour and appreciated a transcript as a deaf visitor. I learned about the Hawaiian royal family and it helped me better understand history of Hawaii. To those interested in history of Hawaii, I would recommend this place to visit.

Battleship Missouri is a well-preserved and fascinating walk through WWII history, which is a must see if you’re visiting Oahu.

Touring a battleship is an adventure in itself, but Mighty Mo is a bit more special than the rest based on its symbolic location docked at Ford Island right next to the Arizona Memorial and its status as half of the American “bookends of WWII.” Also it’s 360 degree view of Pearl Harbor, the mountains and south shore is tough to beat.

A few tips to consider.. bring good walking shoes and sunscreen. If you’re not affiliated with the U.S military/govt, you’ll have to arrange access and transportation through the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center or 3rd party excursion entity since Mighty Mo is technically on the active naval base. It does cost ~$35 for general admission, but I assure you it’s worth it. The Battleship Missouri Foundation is a dedicated, nonprofit contingent of volunteers that put all proceeds towards maintaining, preserving and improving the ship. You’re money is going to a great cause.

On deck, they have numerous, highly knowledgeable guides that can explain some of the history, which is a great intro to your visit here. For timing, you could easily spend like 4 hours aboard if you’re a military/history buff to digest all that the ship has to offer.

If you only have an hour or two to spend, here’s what you should hit at minimum.. the six-gun display facing the bow/Arizona memorial, the “Surrender Deck” which is starboard side facing the submarine piers, the officers living area & Captains quarters and the bridge (a couple decks up) where command and navigation was done.

Allotting some extra time will enable you to explore the under decks where the bulk of the crew lived and worked, which is also super interesting. This is an amazing site and totally worth the trip!

It’s an easy paved trail with amazing views, the light house is almost always backed by a beautiful dark blue sea. Unfortunately the trail directly to the light house is closed but there are still many other non-paved trails if you know where to look.

Shari La is the former home of the fabulously wealthy Doris Duke, who built her dream home on this gorgeous peninsula and filled it with superb Islamic art. Visits start and end at the Hawaii Museum of Art in downtown Honolulu from where a bus leaves for the Diamond Head mansion. Once there, curators explain the pieces on show on walls, floors and ceilings, before visitors are allowed time to wander round inside and out and take photographs. Ice cream on the lawn concludes the visit.

This museum was unexpectedly fantastic. I did not hear recommendations for it but my boys wanted to go. It did seem too big from the outside but inside was an impressive collection of artifacts and displays. The design, layout, and exhibits were outstanding. It’s also free.

Beautiful place to escape the crowds in Waikiki. Main trails are marked and pretty well maintained. The other trails are not and very rough/muddy/rocky but pretty. Main trail to waterfall is rocky and slippery in places. Recommend hiking boots for sure.

This larger than life statue stands in the very central part of Waikiki beach and almost everyone takes a pic in front of it.
However, I am not sure they also read the plaque beneath to learn who's this outstanding man - fastest swimmer of his era, winner of several Olympic medals, father of surfing and atop of all a hero who saved lives in California. Big respect.

Kamehameha is Hawaii's first king - the man who united all the islands in 1795 battle at Nu'uanu.
It's imposing statue in gold robes stands in front of the Courthouse.
Across the street is the royal Iolani palace - the seat of Kalakaua, the last king.
