We went to see Kirk Franklin and Maverick City this past Sunday. Once we finally got into the venue, everything was great. But….getting in there? HORRIBLE! Prior to, I read the reviews on here and believe everything you read about the parking!
The event started at 6:45pm and we got to the parking area at 5:00pm. I had considered paying $50 for the VIP parking, but I’m glad I didn’t. We parked right across the street at the gas station for $30. We were able to quickly park and get in the already seemingly long line at 5:10pm. We thought it wasn’t too bad because the gates were supposed to open at 5:30pm. WRONG! The line got ridiculously and increasingly longer as it ended up wrapping around the whole parking lot out into the “sidewalk” area on the main street. They didn’t open the gates until a few minutes after 6:00pm. While we waited in line, we were able to watch the chaos of the “VIP” parking. It took them MUCH longer to park, they had way longer lines, and eventually some were turned away when the lot got too full! 😱
When they finally opened up the gate. We were relieved, but that was short-lived because there came even more craziness. There were signs telling you which line to get in (fast lane, bag check, no bags, etc.). The staff basically said, “Forget that!” They had their own rules for what line to get in, which caused a lot of confusion. Another point (which actually in defense of the venue), a LOT of people had the wrong size/kind of bags and chairs. When they finally got up to the checking part, they were told they had to get rid of it or take it back to their vehicle. People were very loud and vocal to complain about this, BUT it was clearly communicated on the venue’s site, venue’s Facebook page, venue’s post that day, and on my ticket information. I was glad to see them enforce their rules!
Now remember, we got in line at the gate at 5:10pm and we didn’t get through the bag check and then the ticket scanning until 6:40pm! At this point, we were thinking, there’s no way they are starting this at 6:45pm, so we went ahead to the restroom (which was pretty decently clean and fast-moving although I was expecting differently based on reviews) and to get some food and drinks. At 6:49pm, we heard cheering and music! THEY ACTUALLY STARTED ON TIME!! I though that was completely unfair to the people who weren’t able to get in on time BECAUSE OF THE VENUE!!! So people who got to the show an hour and forty-five minutes before it started and were in line 20 minutes before the gates were SUPPOSED to open couldn’t get to their seats in time….that’s just wrong for all of those who were in line behind us because I know they didn’t make it in time. Overall, I would rate the parking, and venue entrance procedures a very weak 1.
All that to say, once we got inside, I would rate the venue itself a 3 based on food, drinks, and restrooms. The concert itself, I would rate it a 5! All the negativity regarding getting in there was worth the amazing praise and worship experience!
