Don't be scared if you are from our of town. Download the subway app and use the map to navigate. All the lines are color coded and the map is easy to read. It is cheap and gets you places quickly. If you are unsure the attendants are helpful. We have rode the subway several times in Manhattan and people have always been friendly. Yes you will likey see a few homeless people.

Good and fast way to get from Jersey City to NYC, as we did on a daily basis. The ticket machines are a nightmare, as you need to enter the postcode of your credit card.

A member of staff had to explain that, but there’s no sense entering a vice dixit postcode if you’re not from the US. To bypass this, you can enter five zeros.

We had to use the ticket machines, because you cannot tap your contactless card when using a stroller to pass the barriers. Multiple credit cards got rekeyed, and only worked after multiple attempts of buying tickets. Recommend to use cash if you’re in a hurry and need a single ticket, because buying with a credit card is a lengthy process. The ticket you buy, gets ‘eaten’ by the machine if you use it to pass the barrier. Making the whole ticket buying process for PATH a very red tape thing to do.

Other than that we had no troubles with PATH, part from elevators not working.

The old Port Authority was horrible and to be avoided at all costs. Unsafe and scary, Now it's much better. Cleaner and seems safer. Unfortunately, still homeless people , like all of NYC. And I still will tell travelers to be aware and cautious.

The M50 is a crosstown bus that runs on 49th street westbound and 50th street eastbound. It traverses Rockefeller Center and just north of Times Square. The bus was on time and clean. To my surprise, the USB ports actually worked.

I prefer riding the bus over the subway.

This modern extension of the system had received a lot of publicity and it sure took a long time to build. So I was happy to ride it. Very crowded and much-used, so I guess it is much-needed. The stations are big and clean, but not well-decorated. Much deeper than other stations, so the escalators were very welcome.
