- Stan TeczaConnecticut11,304 contributionsWatched a documentary last week on the History Channel on Mr. Houdini. The documentary mentioned that he died on Halloween. I intended to visit on October 31 but a quick Google search brought me to a 1995 New York Times article that mentioned the cemetery closes on Halloween because of fear of vandals destroying or damaging the Houdini gravesite. Further research led me to an article from 2022 implying the same. I decided to motivate last second and head over today before the cemetery closes at 4pm. The main entrance was difficult to locate on a busy street because there was a car parked in the entrance to block visitors. We decided to pull up anyways and we’re directed to the Houdini gravesite. We saw. We mediated. We prayed. Then we left and the gatekeeper locked up at 3:40 right behind us so it seems we got lucky and made it in the nick of time. Houdini would proud of our deft defying stunt. The Halloween window to visit the site is tricky and complicated but can be achieved if one puts their mind to it. In the middle of a block on Second Avenue you can walk through an iron gate down a narrow path. I had taken a different road than my GPS had instructed. To my surprise I saw this unique memorial to those who lost theirs lives on September 11, 2001. It was a garden of memories. Pictures and statues strung together like precious exquisite pearls.
Unlike cold tombstones dotting a cemetery, these were personalized tributes to each fallen first responder. Not only do you acquire a sense of each person, but also of those who remain who honor them.
It only takes a moment of your time to experience the life times of the men and women and dogs featured. They gave their lives.
