Cathelen was our tour guide. She was wonderful. Very informative. I learned a lot of the Cathedral. Visited places that are not open to public. I feel now I want to learn more about it. It was a great experience.

A great historical landmark with some beautiful paintings and sculptures inside. Nice place for a sense of calm and peace amidst the bustling downtown world.

A meaningful stop-in that was a welcome, reverent reprieve from the busy streets of NYC. This was my favorite church in NYC, I found it to be more peaceful and serene than St. Patricks.

We literally followed the music. We could hear the most amazing soulful and powerful music and we had to figure out where it was coming from. We only stayed for a short time due to time contraints, however was well worth a visit. The spiritual music was truly beautiful and awe-inspiring.

There was a long line to enter the church, but eventually everyone got in. We were some of the last to enter, but we had very good seats.
Service by Senior Pastor Brown was such a great experience, and the gospel music was great. The community was so friendly.
Highlight was the long preach by a female pastor, that was one of the best speeches I heard in my life 🙏🏻

Fantastic service. The congregation was very welcoming to visitors. You could not get a more authentic gospel expericence than this. Also the church in itself is very beautiful.

God bless them , they do good work! The church is a holy place and gives a peaceful feeling in such a chaotic area during chaotic times. The Franciscans that serve there are wonderful people. Strongly recommend a visit.

If you are looking to find the next Celine Dion amongst the female soloists, look somewhere else. Now, if what you want is to witness one of the most moving, authentic and amazing experiences in the Harlem gospel circuit, look no further.

As an experienced traveler to NYC, I've been to several other gospel services, but none came even close to the Greater Refuge Temple's. In short:

-Warm welcome by the security and ushers, will make you feel at home instantly. Just make sure you arrive at least one-half hour before service starts at 11 AM
-A high-energy choir that will rock you and make you clap and sing the name of Jesus even if you are an atheist like me.
-People (including some members of the choir) entering a religious trance, dancing, singing, stomping, shouting and raising their hands to receive the energy of the Lord.
-A deco building that just for its architectural value is worth the visit.

    Don't miss it.

Now, a few useful tips and rules of etiquette:

    a) This is not a musical. It's a religious service and as such, respect it by NOT using your cell phone to chat or shoot video. You will be asked to quit and it's embarrassing. Also, don't talk out loud or do anything that could be considered rude.

    b) Although regulars wear their best clothes (some of the ladies' hats are spectacular), you don't need to wear a tie. However, be sensible and avoid shorts, flip-flops, sleeveless shirts, etc.

    c) The service is rather long, about two hours. Although it's worth while sitting through all of it, you can leave earlier, just do it discreetly and not while the preacher is preaching. And don't leave before the alms and donation pan is handled around, that's cheap.

    d) More on money: everyone donates money to the temple, and it is its main income source. Even the preacher, the members of the choir and the ushers do. So why wouldn't you? Don't embarrass yourself and give out some insignificant amount. I've seen tourists who would gladly spend 150 dollars per person on a Broadway show give nothing, or hand out a one-dollar bill to represent their whole family. Again, don't be cheap, it's disgusting to see and offensive to those who opened their doors for you to share this wonderful experience with them.

After service is finished, you can eat at the temple (I haven't so I could not comment), or go to one of the restaurants around to eat some soul food and complete your Harlem experience.

Note: my teenage sons, more terrenal than spiritual, flipped out and said it was one of the vacation's highlights.

Looked for a Catholic church near the Met to attend Sunday mass while visiting from out of town and came across this parish that’s a less than 5-minute walk from the subway and 5-minute walk to the Met. Beyond the location being perfect, the church is gorgeous and the Sunday 11am service was a great experience. The choir was lovely and the parish felt welcoming to out-of-town visitors with kind and helpful ushers who didn’t mind pointing out restrooms, etc. The parish is also accommodating to whatever your COVID vaccine status is. If you’ve received both doses you’re welcome to sit in a certain area with your mask on or off. If you’ve not received your vaccine then there’s a dedicated section for social distancing and required masks. A must-see parish for its beauty, welcoming spirit, and location!

Among New York's many Churches stands this hidden gem, Grace Church. This historic parish is part of the Episcopal Diocese of NY. Once inside you wouldn't know you are in a crowded city like Manhattan. An amazing occurrence since it was completed and consecrated on March 7, 1846. The Church is known for its Stained Glass and Arches. The Architect, James Renwick, completed this Church and later went on to design St Patrick's Cathedral and other notable buildings. Grace Church was known as the first Ruskian (French) Gothic Revival Church in New York City. Besides offering all services, the church has an impressive Boys and Girls Choir. There is a free "Back at Noon" concert and weekend organ meditations that feature its 5,000 pipe organ.

The Schola sings Sundays at noon and they must not be missed. Extreme reverence in all services and excellent preaching by the Dominicans. Great confessors and program of spiritual study and fellowship. A spot to visit and revisit in New York City.

St Peter's Church on Barclay Street in Manhattan is just a short walk from the 9/11 Memorial and Museum located at the site of the World Trade Center. My wife and I visited New York as part of a larger cruise tour and really enjoyed visiting this wonderful church. Initially it has a more modern feel than many similar churches but it's atmospheric inner spirit was uplifting.

Although the church is housed in what used to be a theatre please be aware that this is a church holding a religious ceremony and it’s not a show such as Sister Act. Tourists are welcomed and sit upstairs whilst the congregation is based downstairs. If you are religious then you may find it more interesting than most. If you aren’t religious and are there just for the gospel singing then you will get that, and it’s fantastic, but then you may be bored very quickly by the rest of the ceremony. Many tourists were not respectful to the whole ceremony when I was there and talked throughout which I found offensive and I am not in the slightest bit religious. There are breaks in the ceremony where you will be able to get up and leave, be aware that you can’t just get up and leave whenever you feel like it. No rucksacks/backpacks allowed and hats must be removed - and no photographs!

I poked my head in here on a Sunday evening and they were in the middle of Mass 'for young people'. Is my worst nightmare but actually the choir was very subtle and the whole atmosphere was very welcoming and it felt as if everyone there was friends.
