- kjcamp1208Brentwood, Tennessee5 contributionsMy husband and I took a quick weekend trip to Memphis and decided to do a tour of the Sun Studio. It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. The historic studio has been preserved so well, and we were thankful so much of the original equipment and furnishings were still there. When we stepped into the famous studio where Elvis, Johnny Cash, and B. B. King, recorded amazing music you could feel that creative vibe. Our guide Josh H. did a great job of conveying the history, and stories of the birth of that special sound....Rock and Roll!! Highly recommended for everyone, especially music lovers.Written 18 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Renee G45 contributionsMy husband and I visited here just over 1 before closing time. It was the only time we could visit and we are so glad that we did. It museum was very informative and being from Australia, we had no idea of all the history and what went on many years ago. We liked the way the museum was set out and all the information provided. There was lots of reading but I can understand why. The MLK section toward the end of the museum was emotional. Highly recommend if you’re in Memphis.Written 18 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- l gHampshire, UK173 contributionsWhat a fascinating historic story behind these beautiful animals. Would advise you get there early if you want a good view as it was really busy and did involve a long time standing around.Written 27 September 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - CATRINA LEWIS GMoorhead, MN22 contributionsToday 1/20/24 at 2pm we were going to go see this historic place although we couldn't attend as the building is on fire. We are hopeful that many of the items were able to be saved but this is scary for all of them.
May the owners and city of Memphis still support this great historical time of American history!Written 20 January 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. We visited the Museum on our last day in Memphis. There are some really great exhibits within the museum with several Fire Engines and associated equipment located across the ground floor and many more exhibits included interactive areas located across the first floor.Written 8 October 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - ModernizingBaltimore, MD255 contributionsThis a small museum, off the beaten path that does not get enough press. The museum looks at the economics of cotton and its impact on the economy locally, nationally and internationally. It does so in a way that is interactive and engaging. It also clearly shows the impact of cotton on the varying groups of people who were impacted by the trade. There is no question that the few became rich off of first the enslaved and then sharecroppers. The museum also traces the culture that creates the rich history of the delta and the nation. The use of photos, artifacts and oral histories is engaging and draws you in. Truly, this is a must do.Written 26 June 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- fredyt3Los Angeles, CA1,585 contributionsI have been to the Mason Temple before but this visit was to commemorate Rev., Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr's last speech fifty years later as we were in attendance April 3, 2018. If you are in Memphis, especially if you are near the National Civil Rights Museum and near the Lorraine Motel you must put this on your schedule. They are only one mile apart. It will help connect the Lorraine to give you a better perspective of Dr. King's last days. This iconic building is now the headquarters of the Church of God in Christ. In addition to its founder Charles Mason, it is best known as the site where Dr. King delivered his famous last speech, "I've Been to the Mountaintop." If you are lucky you may get staff to allow you inside to see the spot where he spoke.Written 10 April 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - eatbreadLakeland, TN2,961 contributionsThat this place was so interesting. We went just to kill some time on a dreary day but were pleasantly surprised. Tour guides are volunteers but happy to spend time giving you the history of the plantation. Very rustic...not as fancy as other plantations. Nice grounds to walk around to better understand what life was like in the 1800's.Written 6 July 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Michael CJonesboro, AR3 contributionsI was very pleased with the price of a round trip Amtrak experience from Memphis to New Orleans ($102) however much to my surprise, the cost to park your vehicle amounts to $35.00 per day! My trip lasted 5 days therefore the price to park was much more than the cost of the Amtrak ride!Written 23 March 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - IverJohnsonOklahoma City, OK521 contributionsThe Magevney House is supposedly the oldest surviving residence in Memphis. Built in the 1830's for an Irish Immigrant, this is not a mansion, but a 3-4 room frame house that still has a lot of charm and history. The tour, which is only on the 1st Saturday of each month, is free and takes only about 20 minutes. The exterior takes only 10-15 minutes. This is still a nice tour and well worth the time. Some original but mostly period furniture pieces.Written 9 November 2016This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Matt PGainesville, VA1,389 contributionsThis is piece of history that is forgotten but shouldn't. Memphis should do more about this church. Beale Street Baptist Church, also known as, First Baptist Church or Beale Avenue Baptist Church, is a historic church on Beale Street, built by a congregation of freed slaves. Also in the 1880s, the church also housed the newspaper office of Ida B. Wells, the famous civil rights journalist.Written 9 February 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Paul KHales Corners, WI287 contributionsOnly a true jazz junky would seek out W. C. Handy's home at the end of Beale Street next to the police station. A nice moment in history placed in a location that is accessible.Written 16 April 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
