- B4Travel2San Jose, CA319 contributionsThe Grotto is a beautiful sanctuary owned by the Catholic Church, but open to everyone. It is an oasis of lush gardens, walking trails, a beautiful glass-walled chapel with a view overlooking the mountains, trees, and vistas. They hold a Saint Peregrine Mass, as St. Peregrine is the Patron Saint of cancer and life-threatening illnesses, and people often go to these masses that are looking for solace, peace, spiritual healing, and support. We first heard of it from my uncle who was battling cancer.
When visiting relatives from out of state, we came here to look around. We came in December, so it was cold. At night they have a Festival of Lights, but the group I was with were all too cold to want to stay at night. In December, they also had a life-sized nativity scene outside, in front of the rocks.
It just all gives a sense of beauty and peace, and is a great place to go if you are needing some quiet introspection, want to have a peaceful walk, meditate, or, if battling an illness and want to attend the masses, to feel some uplifiting support. There was even a proposal happening, with flower petals strewn into the shape of a large heart while we were there, as the ambience is so serene.
People travel from far distances to visit the Grotto. It gives you a sense of peace, serenity, and nature. It is good for the soul.Written 16 August 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It is ideal for a family group get together. It’s really spacious and so well stocked with cutlery and crockery etc. It is also in a perfect location to explore portpatrick. We would highly recommend this accommodation.Written 29 July 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- RSNNPortland, OR5,803 contributionsThe First Presbyterian church located in Downtown Portland is an Awesome Gothic church from 1890. It is located between 12th and 13th Avenues, and Alder and Morrison streets. The entire city block is taken up by the church, its lovely garden, and a parking garage. It was build between 1886 and 1890 in a High Victorian Gothic style. Has a 185-foot-tall spire. The First Presbyterian Church has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1974.
The stained glass windows were made by Portland’s Povey Brothers Art Glass Works. There are many of these found all around the church. There is a distinctive large Rose Window on the church. For some reason made me think of the round window on Doctor Strange’s Sanctum Sanctorum. But much more elaborate and fascinating to gaze upon.
The church bell was cast from bronze taken from civil war cannons. The bell is rung twice a day. Before the bell was installed in this church it had be rung when the civil war ended and when Abraham Lincoln died.
There is a pipe organ inside the church. But it is not as old as the church is. It only dates back to 2000 AD. Just a year shy of A Space Odyssey. So HAL 9000 is not the phantom in this place of worship.Written 22 July 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tonight’s 5:30 evening Mass was beautiful! Tonight’s evening Mass was well attended! I was so happy to see the church just about full tonight. The priest gave an excellent homily. The music was beautiful! There were many voices singing tonight. While in the downtown Portland area, be sure to stop at the cathedral whether for a moment of quiet prayer and reflection or one of their daily Masses. I am looking forward to returning.Written 16 October 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- minimize940314Los Angeles, CA3,547 contributionsGood looking church. This is close to the art museum in Portland. I typically liked the exterior as it well harmonized with some of the tree branches.Written 30 August 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Louis M37 contributionsWell...have you ever happened across a place that was a best known item to many and absolutely unknown to many many more? Do you think you know leather handmade goods? Have you ever wished you could assist in restoring the walks of life that kept alive the craftsmanship arts? Well a sacred place of craftsmen in the art of leather goods still exists, and has since 1947. Walk right into this hidden gem of a custom small shop and gain a level of quality that no store, or off the rack could ever offer you. Bathe in the joy and sense of pride of being fitted for your own custom leather jacket, gloves, etc... I cannot express the happiness of my random walk through the doors, the talk with the staff and the discussion and choice to get my own jacket. The comments on the jacket are amazing and the mix into a great Portland exploration is to be part of any vacation spot to stop.Written 6 June 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - tiredandtravelledPortland, OR1,159 contributionsBeautiful building and people. The temple itself is huge and very plain from the back, but in the front it is a celebration of Buddha. Everyone is glad to see you and share their faith with you. You can actually feel the devotion of the worshipers and smell the incense; it is up lifting to see so many positive, happy people. Altars, lanterns and streamers a joyous celebration.Written 7 March 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - interviewtravelerWashington684 contributionsIt's a cute church in downtown. The stained glass windows are quite striking. They do jazz vespers and also Bach cantata vespers sometimes. It seems like a welcoming church.Written 24 January 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.

- tiredandtravelledPortland, OR1,159 contributionsOnly open on a Sunday. Services start at 11:00 am and last for an hour. After the service is a coffee hour for fellowship with the rest of the congregation and a tour and a talk about your questions and the story and the history about the 150 year old Swedish congregation. Two pastors, one is a woman always interesting.... The church and associated halls and buildings take up two entire blocks, only street parking; free on Sundays. Lutheran churches are plain and solidly built.Written 19 March 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
