What travellers are saying
- Jeanne F1 contributionWe had the absolute pleasure of hosting an Italian cooking class with Chef Renato. He came to our home, and we invited three other couples to join us. Some cook, some don’t, but we all love good food. What an experience. From the moment he walked through the door, Chef Renato was the star of the show. He brought all the food and special equipment required. Everyone had a blast, Chef Renato educated us about each ingredient and kept us engaged with his entertaining personality. More importantly, we each took part in preparing every dish, giving the non cooks the confidence they could recreate the dishes at home. Hs recipes were simple, and brought out the subtle flavors of the ingredients. The food we prepared was amazing. His wine pairing recommendations were equally incredible. Cannot recommend a cooking class with Chef Renato highly enough. Weeks later, everyone is still raving about the experience. Date night, team building, or just want to know more about Italian cooking, book a class with Chef, you won’t regret it.Written 13 September 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Meghan W2 contributionsWe booked a private "date night" glass blowing activity for my husband's birthday. It was such an interesting and fun activity. We had a number of projects to choose from and had an amazing hands on experience making our own drinking glasses. We are both hooked and can't wait for our next visit! We plan to bring our whole family for a holiday project. The staff was friendly and super accommodating, which made for a wonderful experience.Written 30 September 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Chris WPortland, OR355 contributionsAttended the knife skills and the salads classes. Learned a ton and ate a ton. Attend with friend or your main squeeze. Secondary squeeze would be fine too! I came solo and totally fit in. Really good experience and used my new learned skills immediately at home. The instructors were super friendly.Written 4 August 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Ash OPortland, OR20 contributionsMy wife and I picked a class, and arrived a little early to secure secure some liquid courage! Provided with all the materials - apron, brushes, paint and a glass of wine, we thoroughly enjoyed the two hour experience following the leader session and were pleasantly surprised at the resulting paintings. Our first but certainly not last and we look forward to returning.Written 28 October 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - TravelingFordMorgantown, WV25 contributionsI used to regularly take NIA classes a few years ago and then moved to a place where there are no NIA classes available. I jumped at the chance to take a class while in Portland, and am so happy I did. Beautiful studio and really nice people!Written 5 November 2014This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- DanaK16183Cedar Mill, OR9 contributionsGreg was great, history was interesting maybe a little long in length. We ended up spending over 200 dollars on our terrariums which are gorgeous just a lot more money than I was expecting. Read your Groupon fine print. The glass jars prices were inflated quite a bit in my opinion. I agree with the other review the price should be better explained.Written 22 March 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Sue TSeattle, WA124 contributionsI was a fan of the Cooking with Caprial TV show years ago, and then Cooking with John and Caprial. I was very excited to see their cooking class listed and signed up with a friend during a trip to Portland. What they possess in experience as chefs and TV personalities they lack in organization. I wasn't a fan today.
The class itself was held at a rented kitchen at 337 NW BROADWAY. Normally it wouldn't be a problem, but this meant we were sharing the space with other people who were prepping for a catering party - and weren't affiliated with John and Caprial from what I could tell. We were just told to always say behind when moving in the kitchen.
We weren't given aprons, the serving table had wrinkled linens so first impressions weren't great. There were 22 (!) people in the class, which is huge for a cooking class that isn't just a demo. We were given printouts of the recipes, but not with the quantities we were to make. For example, dessert was a chocolate cake. The recipe was printed for us, but we were told each table had to make 1 layer of the cake so had to subdivide the recipe by 4. (5 eggs for 4 layers, anyone?) The supplies and tools were not organized or ready for us. We were told what to do and basically had to scramble to find bowls, spoons, wash measuring cups and spoons, search for saucepans. We had to chop onions and then use the cutting boards in other ways but weren't given any cloths to wipe down our stations.
The food itself tasted good. The menu was braised beef in red wine, homemade pasta, bruschetta with onion-pepper topping, eggplant with salsa verde and chocolate cake. Since there were 22 people in the class and one Kitchenaid mixer with a pasta attachment, it took way too long for everyone to roll their pasta and things began to get rushed. The website states the class was to be from 11 am - 1 pm. I'm glad we didn't have other plans because we were there until 2:30.
John and Caprial are very nice. However I was frankly shocked at the lack of organization. I've paid for cooking classes around the world that have been terrific and never have I not gotten an apron to wear, had to do my own dishes, or been so bewildered in a class. If you just want to go as a fan to meet them, then go. However if you really want to go to a cooking class skip this one.Written 11 March 2014This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
