Quite literally just around the corner from the Royal Yacht Squadron , and bounded by the Esplanade and Queen's Road, this simple grass lawn, 1/ 4 mile long has quite a history. The land was gifted to the Co0wes Borouh council by George Stephenson of Railway fame. This grassy well maintained area gently slopes down to the Solent shoreline, with its views of Calshot spit, Fawley oil refinery, and Southampton Water. It was a treat to sit here, and just enjoy all the seaborne action - but others were enjoying picnics, or canine action, charging into the cool waters. There was even some brave souls swimming there - but we turned down this opportunity to develop "goose bumps" with the cold.
Apart from the highly recommended snack bar / ice creamery the " Cabin on the Green", there is a notable weeping Ash tree planted in 1790.
There is a grade 11 listed structure (dating from 1890, - an ornamental cast iron drinking fountain (painted white), and is quite an extraordinary piece of public infrastrucure , at least for the Victorian era.
For such a small publically owned pice of land this is somewhere that locals and visitors alike repreciate - well worth taking time out here.
