What travellers are saying
- Jay LMinneapolis, MN158 contributionsVisitors to Chicago should use this valuable transportation resource. We were able to cover a lot of ground at a fraction of the cost of ride share cars. Get advice from locals if your have concerns about safety on specific routes at specific times of day but we always felt safe when we traveled.Written 18 November 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - christopherbO9687MPActon, MA668 contributionsThe Ogilvie Transportation Center (the former NorthWestern Station) has a a decent collection of fast food restaurant in middle of this busy train station. Note this is a dedicated commuter train station, so the crowds and services in side the station thin out after the evening commute is done.Written 14 July 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - TravelGuyChicagoDeerfield, IL34 contributionsI’ve been riding the Milwaukee District North Line for 35 years. When I first began commuting, it was the gold standard. Trains always on-time, never late for work or late getting home, except during occasional inclement weather. Now, there is an average of at least one 15 minute and sometimes a 30 minute delay every week, even during perfect weather. Conductors are pleasant and the value for the $$$ is good, but you cannot count of getting where you need to be on-time. If you are traveling outside of rush hour, just count on your train being delayed to to “signal problems”. Still, it beats driving if you’re going all the way downtown, but not worth the interminable delays midday and if you’re only traveling a few stops away.Written 18 July 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - James CMount Pleasant, MI10 contributionsThe Texas Eagle provides service from Chicago to San Antonio. In San Antonio it joins the Sunset Limited that runs from New Orleans to Los Angeles. There is a five hour layover in San Antonio during which the cars from the Texas Eagle are attached to the Sunset Limited. During part of this process the Texas Eagle cars are separated from their engine which means no electricity and no air conditioning. This all happens in the middle of the night. The Texas Eagle cars are dark and hot, very uncomfortable and disconcerting, especially for passengers who are traveling with small children. I love traveling on Amtrak but this experience requires some rethinking on Amtrak’s part.
I was continuing on to Phoenix. However, Amtrak does not provide direct service to Phoenix. Passengers who wish to travel on to Phoenix detrain in Maricopa Arizona, about 30 miles south of Phoenix. We are then transported by van to Phoenix. While the station in Maricopa is small and spare, the hospitality in that train station was unprecedented in my travel experience. The station master provided us with snacks, gave us very careful instructions as to boarding, kept us updated on the arrival of our train and made us feel comfortable and at home. Kudos to Amtrak for the treatment we received in Maricopa!Written 6 June 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
