    we liked walking around here although everything was closed for christmas and there were no leaves. the highlight was a gorgeous red cardinal bird

    Review of: Newberry Library
    Helpful staff; temporary exhibits, too
    For casual visitors, the Newberry offer a range of temporary exhibitions (free admission), as well as a small selection of items on show from their permanent collection. There's also a good bookstore as part of the souvenir store.

    I was primarily at the Newberry to undertake some academic research and found the staff consistently helpful and engaged - but you do need to arrange with them in advance if you want to use the library facilities and register (there's no charge). Rules are strictly enforced, so you can't take bags or food in (though there are free lockers) and there's a small coffee station on the ground floor, so you don't have to leave the building for refreshment. My only disappointment is that the catalog is a little patchy, and it's not always easy to determine what to get from the stack.

    Review of: Kendall College
    Best Kept Secret that shouldn’t be a secret
    Our go to place every time we visit Chicago! Great service, great food, great view. It fades most established fine dining restaurant. A perfect place to introduce dining to your kids like we did. Our daughter appreciates the work that goes into artistic meals.

    Review of: Spertus Institute for Jewish Learning and Leadership
    Beautiful, intimate space on Michigan Ave with a nice theater
    I attended a performance of the Chicago Jazz Orchestra in a tribute to Charles Mingus in the theater at the Institute. The upstairs theater was intimate, modern and clean. The bathrooms were also cleaner than local businesses and museums nearby. The upstairs windows give a lovely night view of the park. The architecture feels unique and protective of the inner layers of the building. This event did not offer concessions, but the lobby does have a permanent service area. As we walked around outside the theater, I enjoyed the exhibits. The curatorial staff, in fact all of their staff, appear to do a great job. I will go back for programs or events in this nice space.

    Review of: Cooking & Hospitality Institute of Chicago
    When to a student cooking event
    Was invited by some business associates to get in to a wine and food tasting prepared by the students and staff. The upcoming chefs did a great job in preparing their meals. It was elegant and well-thought out. Though my dates could be wrong, I was not sure what month but it was this past summer that I attended.

    Review of: HBTV Hearty Boys
    A Chicago Gem
    I have been to this restaurant twice. Once with friends and once with my family on a vacation. Both times I was equally impressed. Casual upscale dining. The food is classic American with a gourmet flare. For the quality of food and presentation, the menu is very diverse and very fairly priced. The owners are always around and very friendly. The last time we ate there we had our 4 kids with us (9, 7 and 5 at the time) and it went very well. The owners told us they have a child and they have a ridiculously inexpensive children's menu to accomodate kids. It is probably my favorite restaurant in Chicago. The only drawback for me is I usually stay downtown and it is a bit of trek to the trendy area it is located in but don't let that stop you from finding this Chicago gem.

    Review of: Magic, Inc.
    One of the oldest magic shops in the US, now in a new location.
    If you are a magician, you need to visit this shop at least once during your lifetime. You never know what famous performer you are likely to run into.
