- Grover RPensacola, FL22,266 contributionsOn our trips I like to have something historic and cultural and for California, its Spanish Missions are one of those must see places. There are 21 historic, colonial Spanish Missions in California and while we were close to several, San Gabriel was the best opportunity we had.
We happened to visit on a holy day, Maundy Thursday which may have been good as we arrived with the parking lot empty. Our group of 12 then entered the gift shop and chose the self guided visit of the grounds and church. The mission is a beautiful, historic structure. Like nearly all missions I have visited in Texas, Arizona or California it is a shotgun rectangle with a decorated alter just like it would have looked in the 19th century.
One way San Gabriel did distinguish itself was amazing ground decorated with plants that had been there for decades if not centuries. There was also a great statue to Junipero Serra, the Franciscan friary known as the father of the Californian missions as he started the first 9. San Gabriel was the fourth mission and over time one of the more significant due to its proximity to Los Angeles, which was a California rarity founded without a mission or fort.
There is also a good museum behind the mission that does a good job of explaining the California missions. One noted feature of San Gabriel that will require you to walk the exterior as well is the bell tower at the back of the church. Most have a side tower or bells on the front, but San Gariel has the tower in the back which can be seen from the road as well.
I highly recommend this as a great historic and cultural stop. If you are coming to California, you need to see the Missions and San Gabriel is a great one to see for its grounds, building and museum.Written 20 April 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - R Hoboken2 contributionsConsolidated park experience offers a break from urban shopping street noise and litter. Immediate access to quiet residential streets to the north and, across a road to the west,a larger recreational park.Written 21 December 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Creeping_Death_LALos Angeles, CA4,517 contributionsThis place has been on my bucket list for sometime now and since I was in the area I decided to go inside. I always had a vision in my mind that it would be a big food hall but it's actually small. They have many food choices and dessert stands so you won't get bored due to the many options offered.Written 28 September 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Kenneth LLos Angeles, CA404 contributionsFirst, if you plan to visit this museum, the hours can be unpredictable. The first time we tried to visit was a holiday weekend and the people who run the museum do catering and are usually busy elsewhere on holiday weekends. The second time we tried to visit, it wasn’t open but the back room was being loaned for a meeting but someone took pity on us and let us in. Eventually someone from the museum showed up and opened.
With that out of the way, we really enjoyed seeing the museum. The people were very nice and informative. The small museum is filled with small exhibits and artifacts regarding local San Gabriel history. Not everything is small, there is a carriage in the front room. In the corner is a children’s activity center. Among the small exhibits are: old Sears catalogues, manual typewriter, hardware and blacksmith, a smudge pot (I remember these while growing up in the San Fernando Valley when it still had orange trees), housewares, candle making, Native American grinding stones, how to make adobe bricks. There are a number of small exhibits in two rooms.
There is a small parking lot behind and street parking.Written 26 November 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. We've also done the Court in Session. I recommend that one for newbies over the others.
The puzzles were much more complicated than some of the games I have played elsewhere and really make you think outside the box. This isn't your tear apart the room searching for "stuff" kind of escape room like The Basement, but more along the lines of Exit Game puzzle solving.
The staff is very friendly. They have a cool feature that I've never seen before where you find tokens in your game. The space is quite large and they have parking available for free in the complex.Written 26 May 2015This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
