- Benet T1 contributionHighly recommend the restaurant Krisp! Cosy space and outstanding fresh food! We arrived very late in the evening and were made welcome although we think we inadvertently kept them from closing on time.Written 26 October 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - PLAfromMichiganDetroit, MI262 contributionsQuirky, unique, interesting, and a bit frustrating if you are an American (or, probably a Russian chess buff), the Bobby Fischer Center is a one of a kind historical and cultural outpost in Selfoss, Iceland.
The curator gave us an extended historical lecture, which featured lots of interesting anecdotes and a summary of events that are obscure to many that are aware of Fischer's incredible exploits as a chess player. Among these--the story of how Fischer was granted asylum and came to Iceland after being a fugitive for years. That was something I didn't know.
I did suggest a few corrections to the narrative based on my knowledge of US history. However, this is history as told first hand from the local Icelandic perspective, and a part of Icelandic (and American and Russian and Balkan and Japanese) history you can find in one place in the world.
I didn't play a chess game here, but I'll bet you could find some chess players around if you came. This is a bit of a celebration of chess before computers and the ability to cheat using secret communication devices came on the scene. Also, don't expect a fulsome exploration of everything Fischer did or said.
Suggestion: Stop at the book store and coffee shop also while you are in Selfoss.Written 8 December 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. We ate it almost every morning and loved it!! So when we found there was a place to learn some history about this delicious dairy product, we thought...why not?! The museum is quaint, you only need about 30 minutes to tour it, but I thought it was very informative. To learn the history and traditions of making Skyr was really nice and at the end it came with a delicious tasting. I would recommend a quick stop here if you are into learning about food and it's origins.Written 5 November 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
