One of the highlights in Shanghai is to visit this memorable acrobatic performance by their locals. It is rather expensive, undeniably, but completely worthy as it can be an eye-opener for those who haven’t watched it before. My first encounter with acrobatic performances was through television, but watching it live feels real and magnified, and as a form of cultural exposure to Chinese arts.

We purchased the ticket online and collected the hard-copy ticket on-site by exchanging details of our purchase. It took us at least half an hour to find the exact location of this show through asking around, after alighting at Shanghai Circus World train station. Luckily, we were on time to watch the performance and the show did not start promptly too. The number of audiences was like less than half of its full capacity, and mainly tourists. We were allowed to eat while watching this performance. Mum bought a pop corn at RMB 40.

After the performance, we decided to purchase their DVD at RMB 150 as souvenir. I was the only customer buying this DVD. The other tourists were rushing back to their tour bus.

Beautiful facility. We walked up in there wearing jeans and I had a bottle of baijiu(moonshine) that of which they held for me at the entrance until we left. The staff were nice but some of the people we sat next to made us feel like we didn’t belong. We got to experience being lasered from above for trying record a bit and a long stare/lecture from the lady next to me because I decided to eat a tic-tac during the performance and the rattling noise bothered her. She glared at me through the whole process of taking my tic-tacs out of my pocket, giving one to To my wife, and getting myself one. Then she told me not to do it lol. I was laughing and ate about 4 more during the show. Lol

Overall, the theater was beautiful, the musicians were amazing, and we enjoyed it for what it was.

This is an excellent place to experience traditional Chinese opera. Very good productions and good sight lines from most seats. Not too expensive either. To Western ears Chinese opera can be a bit of an acquired taste, but one that is definitely worth acquiring. Thankfully smoking is now banned throughout the theatre.

I thought it would be full of acts I've seen before but no! It was great. there were some "old" acts but even those had twists. And each act was unique and so well done. Really really recomend it.

I visited this theatre during one evening in Shanghai. It was very close to my hotel, JW Marriott, and People’s Park making it easy to find and walk to.

It was a huge glass and concrete building that soared above and looked quite impressive when fully lit. On the top floor was a banquet hall/restaurant. There were three different halls inside that have hosted operas, plays, concerts, etc.

This attraction has the same great ambiance and flair it has always had -- fully recommended for those who like this kind of youth scene or are curious about idol culture. Seeing the girls is very easy and very cheap. The songs are great, and the girls are very funny. However, it's now much harder to attend an actual stage performance without understanding of how the group and its company functions.

Keep in mind, it is now reservation only (unless the show isn't sold out, but knowledge of the group is needed to know if it will be sold out or not). Certain "teams" perform on different days, and sometimes they don't perform at all, so it's not a "walk-ins welcome" kind of place. The schedule will not be posted anywhere physically, it is posted on the SNH48 website, which is fully in Chinese.

Tickets must be booked online, either through email reservation for foreigners (which is not recommended, the email on the website is wrong and they only deal in Chinese) or the SNH48 Official Online Mall (the ticketing section). This route requires you to be identity verified with a passport (and apply for PayPal use if you don't have a Chinese bank account), but the overall process is much more simple after verification. One pro of email reservation for foreigners is that you can pay with cash when you pick up the tickets at the theater. The con of that method is that you must provide a scan of your passport, your trip itinerary, and survive communication barriers with the ticket guys.

If you do end up making it to a stage performance, I salute you! The SNH48 Theater is a wonderful attraction that I would wholeheartedly recommend to anyone, though you'll mainly find theatergoers to be in their early to mid 20s, some older. This is the main demographic. Even though the group is fully female, don't be daunted to attend as a woman if you're curious. Some girls have more female fans than male fans (some very considerably), so you'll find a nice gender split here, depending on the day. While originally geared towards young men, the theater is equally as attended by young women.

The theater also has a small merchandise shop and cafe area with free WiFi and tables. Sometimes SNH48 members hold live stages on the cafe's tiny stage.

Saw a performance in 2016 and loved it. (See my July 16, 2016 review.)

On this visit, I was delighted to see some of my favourite acts repeated, plus colourful new routines and costumes.

There is no intermission, so plan your bathroom stops accordingly.

I was there for a flamenco dance show, performed by the National Ballet of Spain. Amazing performance, unearthly architecture. It’s a very new venue, opened in Oct 2016.
Definitely a must see by architecture and art lovers.
