- SB01Krakow, Poland808 contributionsSitting amongst all the high rise and neon is this beautiful walled garden in traditional Chinese style, being full of waterways, conifers, rockeries and statues. But garden is a misnomer as there are temples, halls, boathouses and even a theatre in traditional styles that elevate the gardens to remarkable heights. It is a lovely, relaxing place to enjoy outside peak times. During peak times it’s absolutely rammed! Like almost everywhere you need Alipay for your tickets so come prepared. Decent washrooms. IMO a must see in Shanghai.
Shanghai old streets are just behind, but they seem to either be about to be knocked down or more optimistically restored. Need to come back in Spring to witness the whole garden in full bloom. Great visit. Huge area to cover though! There’s conversatories, and separate gardens in this compound. Just visited for the first time, and liked it better than Guyi Garden because there were practically no people - even on a Saturday! Beautiful setting and we had a great time feeding the fish. My son and I (both foreigners) were allowed to visit (no Chinese ID with us), so I guess they fixed the issue where they weren’t previously allowing foreigners. The restaurant might as well have been closed when we ate there: it took 15 minutes to get service, 15 minutes to get our first greasy dish of braised bran and just as we were ready to leave, the braised pork came, with the wrong side dish. The waiter seemed like he was purposefully serving everybody else before.

It is relatively narrow but provides a good half hour walk without cars buzzing along. Most of the park pathways overlook the meandering Huangpu River. There are a mix of stone pebble trails, pavement, wood steps and wooden boards so walking is by far the best option. I had couple of children with manual scooters and they needed a bit of carrying from time to time, but can be used too. It is a very tranquil park in a city that is mostly a concrete and car jungle. There were no crowds during a normal weekday. Recommend packing your own water and snacks, the little cafe in the park was not open during the week. The advantage in this park is it is suitable for running and biking as it has large open roads compared to many parks in Shanghai. It is frequented by locals and there are some small restaurants and seating areas next to the lake. - Jo-AnnKuala Lumpur, Malaysia15,996 contributionsLine 3 or 8 to Hongkou Football Stadium Station leads to you to the park. When you get out if the station, walk left and you are in the park already. Park is huge and crowded during weekends. Lu Xun’s cemetery is in the park, at a serene corner. Lu Xun Memorial Hall or Museum is REALLY GOOD. There’s English description and explanation alongside Chinese, all the way. There is also a Plum Garden as well in the park.
