    Great, but full
    Great museum over five different floors with high amount of exhibition items. Very interesting for kids. Unfortunately it was crazy crowded.

    Reasonable and inexpensive place for a toddler day-trip
    We live in Shanghai and this is an inexpensive place to take our toddler for a day trip.

    The front entrance is shabby and odd plastic cut-outs of Bugs Bunny and Pepe le Pew are a very strange way of introducing guests to a place which is about insects. Get through that and there's a fish feeding area where you can get VERY close to the fish and kids always love that part (though such proximity to the fish and the water is good and bad from a parental point of view).

    Inside, you'll find a place that is much bigger than it looks and has some decent exhibits. Lots of creepy crawlies - snakes, spiders, bugs etc. There are some good class-room areas and if you're lucky, you'll chance upon a staff-member teaching kids about how spiders lay eggs or how chameleons change colour. Classes are pretty good and aimed at youngsters below 12. 

    Yes, in response to some of the other reviews, some of the enclosures for the bigger creatures (crocodiles and turtles) do seem woefully inadequate. We've had three trips and we have seen some improvement which at least is a step in the right direction.

    For overseas visitors, English translations of the exhibits' information are pretty bad,  but I suppose you don't really need to speak Chinese to look at a snake or appreciate a sea-horse.  

    There's a small mammal section where you can feed guinea pigs, rabbits and goats which our son enjoys a lot.

    Overall, if you're visiting from overseas or a difference province, this is not a priority. But if you live in Shanghai and are looking for a family friendly inexpensive outing, this is not bad.

    Budget about 2-3 hours to see everything.

    World class natural history museum
    Large museum with vast collection of natural science. Attractive for both adults and kids. Lots of interactive facilities to learn about lives on earth.
