The monument is a copy of the famous steel palm, forged in 1895 by the Uzovka (ex Donetsk) blacksmith Alexey Mertsalov. The original is kept in the museum of the Mining Institute in Saint Petersburg. In 1900 the palm of Mercalov was exhibited at the World Industrial Exhibition in Paris, in the pavilion of the Novorossiysk Society of Coal, Iron and Rails Production, where A. Mertsalov worked. The pavilion won the Grand Prix award. The author of this monument succeeded in creating a unique image of Donbass that best of all is expressed by the slogan The capability has been proved by the deeds. It is a real image of the labour region, with difficult and often tragic history, that with its own hands forged and forges its fate at all times. One who did not see this monument and does not perceive it as a symbol of history, prosperity and karma of Donbass will never understand its soul

Very cool weapons and war artifacts from the Soviet and Nazi era of WW2. Many very rare items not normally seen. Visited here in July 2013 prior to the Russian occupation of Donetsk. I've heard from local friends that many of the rare weapons and artifacts had since been stolen from the museum.

i came across this by accident, and what a surprise, i was walking along and i heard the beatles playing, i turn round the corner and there is was, a statue to the beatles, who would have thought you would find a statue to the beatles in Donetsk. there's a sign with liverpool on it, there's also a British themed club called liverpool club there's also a restaurant next to it which serves pretty decent food which works on card system where you buy a card and you pre-loaded with money then your free to buy the food.

As a Welsh woman who had been fascinated by the history of South Walian John Hughes' founding of Yusovka/Donetsk, I was thrilled to be able to visit this statue of the founder of the city when travelling through the Donbas by horse (The Long Horse Ride) in 2011 (not 2022 as I have been forced to enter!). However, the labelling of this monument on Trip Advisor is not correct, as can be seen by the photo I attach. The statue is of founder John Hughes himself, who died in 1889 (as shown on the plaque). It is not of John James Hughes (who died in 1917) who was the eldest of John Hughes' four sons, the others being Arthur David, Ivor and Albert Llewellyn. They all worked in some capacity for their father's New Russia Company in Donetsk, John James Hughes becoming managing director after his father John Hughes' death. I understand that this statue was still standing a couple of months ago, in spite of the troubles.

Was expecting the worst in Donetsk as heard some horror stories concerning the Ukraine. Well Donetsk is beautiful and the people were generally lovely. My son loved a restaurant called 'Suncity' the food here was great and the prices cheap. Only downside is the national airlines who are dreadful at staying on time.
