What travellers are saying
- lindsaysimonsonNew Paltz, NY13 contributionsFirst off, we are experienced hikers and found this to be a TOUGH hike. Definitely allow yourself a day or two in Lake Atitlan or Antigua to acclimate to the elevation. Even then, you’ll almost definitely feel the effects of the elevation. It took us 4 hours and was almost entirely at least a 45 degree climb through fine volcanic stones. Second, definitely go with a guide. The trail forks off multiple times and without a guide we certainly would have gotten lost. The guide companies also have a shelter and campfire at base camp, both necessary and worth it because it will almost certainly be cold and raining during the afternoon and evening. That said, this is a truly remarkable experience. We had the most amazing views when the clouds cleared around 11pm and 3pm and could hear the volcano erupting all night. This volcano is extremely active, erupting about every 20 minutes. We did the hike to the summit in the morning, which also provides amazing views if you’re lucky with the weather. If the weather isn’t great, staying at base camp will probably afford you some spectacular views as well because the volcano is more likely to be clear. Definitely pack good hiking boots, extra socks, warm pants, gloves, hat, and rain coat for base camp and the summit. Hiking poles or sticks will save you. Take your time and enjoy!Written 1 May 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- David L3 contributionsAltitude sickness can be a concern here. I was fine, my wife had to ride a horse ( about $40 for the climb and descent) . We started at 6,000 feet and climbed to 7,200.
Some parts of the trail were steep and challenging others were slightly challenging. If you're not used to altitude try belly breathing. Look it up, it helps.
Some of the people in our group had a pace that kept up from the lava flow, roasting marshmallows and pizza. We had a well-trained guide.Written 1 May 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC. - Nathalie2 contributionsClimbing Acatenango with Wicho & Charlie was by far the best experience of our trip. From beginning to end, they had an impeccable service. They have a very wide range of items to rent out for the hike as it gets quite cold at night at the top of the volcano, which was highly reassuring. The guides were helpful, fun and professional. The meals were vegan and delicious. Their basecamp is perfectly located right in front of Volcan Fuego - spectacular views all night long! They also have little cabanas / A frames made of metal, which is far better than tents as they protect from wind.
Highly recommend !!Written 10 May 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC. - Tatiana4 contributionsWhat a great tour agency! Took care of all of us 100%! Amazing knowledgeable guides,

Look no further!Written 28 April 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC. - Leigh-Anne3 contributionsIf you want to hike Acatenango, you definitely need to go with Elvin and his company!! This hike was more difficult than I expected and I wouldn't have made it to the top without Elvin's encouragement and patience.
We were also all so well taken care of from start to finish with Association Aprode. I was very grateful that Elvin was able to loan me warmer clothing since the top of the volcano is quite cold and was also really happy that our sleeping bags, mattress pads, and tents were already set up when we arrived at basecamp. The food was all great, everything from the breakfast at Elvin's family's house to the hot chocolate when we reached basecamp to the spaghetti for dinner.
Some advice: if you're not used to strenuous hikes, consider talking with Elvin beforehand about hiring a porter for around $25. If you get motion sickness, take some Dramamine before leaving Antigua because it's a curvy ride up the mountain. And if your hometown is at sea level like me, consider getting some altitude pills to help prevent altitude sickness. But despite the challenges I faced with this hike, I couldn't recommend it more highly! This was a once in a lifetime experience that I'll always be grateful for.Written 3 April 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC. - Jose BortKenner, LA39 contributionsDefinitely an excellent team !! I chose this company because a friend from Guatemala recommended it to me, initially I was thinking of booking with another company that I saw here. I am very happy with my friend's suggestion, this company is excellent, they are super patient with people like me, the last time I climbed a mountain like this was 18 years ago. At times I thought I would die as it is a super steep climb, especially for people who are not used to hiking. They were quite patient with me and encouraged me all the time. They have very good organization and their guides are very well prepared. If I ever get the urge to climb a volcano again I will definitely book with them.Written 6 May 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- Wendi C2 contributionsOur trip to Guatemala wouldn’t have been the same without Carlos! He is so knowledgeable about the history and culture of the area. He has a very cheerful disposition and made us all feel very comfortable and safe. His van was so nice to travel in, and he is an excellent driver. I highly recommend Carlos!Written 10 February 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.

I did the 5 Day Hut to Hut Trekking from Nebaj to Todos Santos recently. Amazing scenery, nice mountain hiking with incredible views over the mountain ridges of the Western Highlands of Guatemala. We stayed overnight in small villages along the trek with local mayan familys, we had dinner together with the familys and we got an incredible view into the life of the people living in the mountains. Our Guide Pepian was amazing- very friendly, knowledgeable and funny. I really enjoyed every single day of Trekking and also the food along the way was always very delicious.Written 24 April 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC. - ManycarsPrague, Czech Republic56 contributionsFrom the time we were picked up to when we were dropped off, the experience was simply incredible! Lilly communicated thoroughly throughout the process and tailored a trip specifically for my wife and me.
Our driver, Darwin, picked us up in a nice car and took us to Antiqua to enjoy the Palm Sunday processions. We followed that with a trip to Copan. The hotels were excellent boutique hotels and our guide for Copan was first class.
