- anakpantaiJakarta, Indonesia96 contributionsThe musuem is located in the historic quarter of Jakarta which can be reached by the Transjakarta busway, alighting at the Jakarta Kota train station and continuing afoot through the quarters as it is car-free zone.
This historic building was rebuilt in 1707 and served as the Cityhall during the Dutch occupation. Currently it is serving as the Jakarta History Museum which tells the history of Jakarta, starting from the time of the kingdom of Tarumanegara up until now.
The entrance is very affordable (underpriced i feel), and it is recommendable to leverage the guided tour to give context and sense of each of the rooms. The guides are very knowledgeable and can speak English.
A very good way to learn about the history of the city of Jakarta and its inhabitants.Written 11 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Aryo Bimo NotohadikoesoemoIndonesia242 contributionsThis former British Consul building & Japanese Navy Officer Private House were interestingly far from the image of museum you would met at Jakarta nowadays. it was more like a little house when you could spent the time laughing and playing while hearing the old BBC or NIROM broadcast playing Alexander's Ragtime Band.Written 1 December 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - ChrisThomasTravelsManama, Bahrain618 contributionsThis museum is worth a look and should be on every history-hungry traveler's itinerary. Be warned, English explanations are in short supply here. Best bring along a Bahasa Indonesia speaking friend or guide.Written 8 December 2016This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Priambudi DJakarta, Indonesia157 contributionsI visited the Museum of National Awakening Jakarta on Saturday June 22, 2019. I arrived there at 10:00 a.m. and spent an hour there. They did not charge me may be because it was the anniversary of Jakarta.
The museum building was in good condition and I thought it was one of best museums in Jakarta. Previously, the building was a medicine school during Dutch colonialism era which was named Stovia.
Being located in the center of Jakarta, the museum has a very large garden inside. The garden was so green and clean.
The best way to enjoy is by walking clockwise after the entrance, so we can learn the history of Indonesia from the very beginning until the period before the independence of the nation.
We can read about the history of Indonesia, for example about the Indonesian spices which had attracted many European countries like the Dutch to come. The story is written in Bahasa Indonesia and English. During my visit, there were no audio and video equipment available for visitors.
What attracted me most about the museum were the Indonesian traditional dances and music classes conducted for children. And there were so many enthusiastic children enrolled the classes. The museum then became so alive, but still not so noisy to enjoy. Some collections are displayed inside the closed rooms with AC, but most are displayed in the open rooms. That is why casual wear may be more comfortable when visiting it.
The museum also has public facilities such as small library and health clinic for the community and it makes the museum more alive and just a building which displays collections.Written 26 June 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. We can hear Indonesia Raya (Indonesian national anthem) violin version everywhere and take a chance to see the actual violin of W. R. Soepratman, man behind the national anthem.
The ticket fee is so cheap, it only took 2000IDR to brings your nationalist soul out. There are many comics of the first and second congress of Indonesian Youth Movement you can read while listen to the national anthem. Take a guide with you to know deeper about the movement.Written 9 February 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Built in 1755 as residence of R de Klerk, one of VOC's rich Governor Gen, nowadays it's no longer used to keep archive but has become a museum, exhibition or wedding venue etc. apart from its interesting collection and furniture this building has beautiful carvings above each door, huge glass windows, and interestingly tiles depicting bible stories on the front rooms (the building was also once used as a church). Visiting this 9.000m2 building compound with its 2 wings for more than 100 slaves, stalls, warehouse etc will give you an idea the sort of life the Gov Gen had those days.Written 30 December 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
