What travellers are saying
- AZCasualTravelerMesa, AZ1,911 contributionsThe National Museum of Indonesia provides visitors with an insight into Indonesia’s long history in cultural heritage from prehistoric days up to today. The museum houses an impressive collection of many artifacts covering Indonesia’s Prehistory, Archaeology, Ethnography, Geography and Historical Relics. The Museum provides a good starting place to get a feeling of Indonesian culture prior to traveling through the countryside.Written 16 October 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Al-BurjIthaca, NY192 contributionsThe best Museum I visited in Jakarta and was pretty good about having English translations of all the information.
There are several 2 hour slots throughout the day. I went from 1 pm to 3 pm. Before entering you do need to scan a QR code that brings up a sign-up form. If there was an English version of the form, I never found it.
Instead I used the Indonesian form and Google translate to fill it out and be eligible to take the tour.Written 28 October 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The museum previously was a church and is repurposed to be a museum exhibiting puppets (wayang) from various parts in Indonesia. You can also observe the evolution of these puppets from their humble beginnings and the modern interpretation.
There is a section which is dedicated to the origins of the museum, which is a church and cemetery, where you can read and see the various tombstones from people buried, and also this is where Jan Pieterszoon Coen, the founder of Batavia (Jakarta), was buried. The tomb since then has been moved to another location.
Interestingly enough there is a section on the second floor of the museum which also shows the various puppets from around the globe.
All in all it was an interesting visit (affordable also).Written 11 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. This historic building was rebuilt in 1707 and served as the Cityhall during the Dutch occupation. Currently it is serving as the Jakarta History Museum which tells the history of Jakarta, starting from the time of the kingdom of Tarumanegara up until now.
The entrance is very affordable (underpriced i feel), and it is recommendable to leverage the guided tour to give context and sense of each of the rooms. The guides are very knowledgeable and can speak English.
A very good way to learn about the history of the city of Jakarta and its inhabitants.Written 11 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Officially opened as textile museum in the 1970s, this museum houses a wide range of textiles from many regions of Indonesia.
THE ATMOSPHERE
I love being in the back garden where they grow various kinds of plants, such as hibiscus, ylang ylang, jasmine and guavas - some are used as natural dyes for the clothes exhibited in the museum.
There were signs of photo taking not allowed inside, so I didn't take any indoors photos, but you can have a glimpse of how it would feel like being their garden by looking at some pics I took.
WHAT I LIKED BEST
The garden.
WHAT I THINK COULD BE IMPROVED
The narrow alley in between exhibits... it was as if they tried to cramp as many clothes as possible inside a room. The shop was also selling some low quality of products, such as 'kebaya yang bordirannya ditempel' and printing batik.
I think that it's a missed opportunity to introduce a rich heritage of Indonesia when you're putting a product that could be made better in the only shop in this museum.Written 16 April 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It was the same the last time I visited albeit one of the galleries had a different exhibition.
The permanent collection shows the evolution of art in Indonesia and has some nice examples of colonial to contemporary. I found it inspirational and it served as a good tribute to the nations arts.
The special exhibition was Paris Jakarta: 1959-1995. We worth a visit. Some pieces very ordinary but also very thought provoking - Faucheur - House of Bricks simple subject well portrayed. Kandinsky is well represented. A tapestry is on display by a Filipino artist Pacita Abad - which commands attention.
Well worth a visit.
Allow a couple of hours to amble around. Maybe they are preparing a new exhibition in the central hall. Cafe facilities were closed.Written 22 December 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - JackSwetsSchererville, IN74 contributionsDon’t be tiredwhen visiting this museum. There are a lot of diaramas and signs to read about different confrontations. Many of the signs have no english on them so recommend having google translate with you. All displays are static with no interactivity. The cost to get in for the 3 of us was 12,000 Rp so less than 1 USD. Be prepared to do a lot of reading in order to really understand the history here.Written 21 September 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Hafidz AlattasJakarta, Indonesia350 contributionsCame to my biggest surprise to find this treasure in the middle of Jakarta. You cannot believe yourr eyes until you get inside. This museum will take you travel thorugh as early as 19 century through as ancient as 4000 BC. Thousands of stunning collections literally from all over the world in lush greenery made possible for all of us to see by Mr Syahrial Djalil - Indonesian ads mogul - who traveled the globe and frequently attended Christie's bids. You need to make a appointment with the manager (Rian) to schedule a visit. A group visit can only be arranged for 15 persons at most. This place will amaze you !Written 11 March 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.

- Melinda SIstanbul, Türkiye90 contributionsThis museum is left over of the Dutch colony, was build around 1652 - 1771. The Dutch east india company was using this for the warehouse all spices then delivery outside jakarta. The museum itself established about 1977. The architecture is still good condition, but on 2018 there is big fire and make almost destroyed the building, but they are fixing and rebuild again. Inside we can see the history about sailing boat from all around Indonesia, the famous one called „“pinisi boat“. Not only boat we can learn , but also all history about all sailors who ever came or just know about indonesia, such as marcopolo, Cheng ho, cornelis de houtman, and many more. Entrance ticket is 5k IDR, there are 2 part, first is tower which is the front part of the museum but the ticket is one for all museum. The location is near to old town jakarta, you can walk or by bus too if you want.
PS: Specially for foreigners, if they are offer you a guide tour, it is not really necessary i think, there are explanations inside. And be careful for the scammers.Written 19 August 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
