    Stunning
    Very scenic, hexagonal rock columns are numerous and huge.
    Best place in the city for coasteering, with lots of small bays and caves along the coastline.

    Beautiful hike in the heart of the city
    We took a hike starting from Wan Chai Gap Road up to Aberdeen Reservoirs. The start of the hike (Wan Chai Gap Road) was only 5-minute walk from Wan Chai MTR, making it very convenient. The first part of the hike (Wan Chai Green Trail) was quite a climb as there're steps and steep road up the mountain for about 1.4 km. Once you get to Aberdeen Reservoir Road, the hike is a lot easier and the view is slightly better. It's highly recommended as it's conveniently located and a beautiful and refreshing trail. Anyhow, try to avoid going on a hike on a rainy day as the road can be very slippery. It was drizzling on the day I went there and I slipped a few times on the way down.

    Very popular hiking destination in Hong Kong for locals
    The Tai Lam Chung Reservoir is also locally known as the 1000 Islands Reservoir and is the feature geographical highlight of the Tai Lam Chung Country Park in the Tuen Mun District of the New Territories. The lake was created between 1952-57 by damming the Lam Chung Valley. Because of the hilly landscape and twisting valley grounds, the flooding created a reservoir with what appears to have numerous islands, hence the nickname.

    You can hike to the reservoir from several locations. The most convenient being the MacLehose Trail Section 10 which passes through the country park on the northern side of the reservoir. Around the midpoint, there is a short splinter trail that is very well marked. It is just 200 metres and leads to the Reservoir Islands Viewpoint, a fairly large area that is elevated and providing a handful of spots where you will find rewarding panoramic views of the reservoir.

    Note: This is one of the most photographed locations in Hong Kong by Hongkongers so do be ready for crowds if visiting on weekends or public holidays, especially after 10am. If you want to visit on these days, best to go early or just wait and visit on normal weekdays when you won't have to deal with the crowds at the viewpoint.

    Note: To access the reservoir and viewpoint from Tuen Mun, take light green minibus 43 (circular route) from just outside and across the street from V City Mall (3-4 minute walk from the Tuen Mun MTR Exit C or D). Take the mini bus to the end of the So Kwun Wat village. Get out at the last stop next to a small Tin Hau temple. Many others will be exiting here to begin the hike so don't worry about missing your stop. Further, just return to this location on the way back if you are planning to return to Tuen Mun after seeing the reservoir.

    3rd largest reservoir in HK, some good hiking in the area
    The Shek Pik Reservoir is the third largest man-made lake in Hong Kong providing storage capacity for 24 million cubic metres of fresh water. It was built between 1957-63 and is located at the western end of Lantau Island.

    You can view the reservoir from the roadside at the dam as well as from many of the trails that ascend the range to the east. There is a fairly basic Shek Pik Country Trail that starts to the east of the reservoir before winding north to Ngong Ping Village. Various other trails like West Dog's Teeth and Lantau Peak provide nice views of the reservoir as well, particularly on days with good sky conditions.

    Note: Another interesting thing to see, down below the reservoir dam is the Ancient Rock Carving, one of nine that have been discovered throughout Hong Kong. Just follow the road from the southeast end of the dam 700 metres. There are signs along the way, no way to get lost.

    If you want to visit the Shek Pik Reservoir, there are several New Lantau Bus company routes that pass by linking Ngong Ping Village to Tung Chung and Mui Wo. There is a bus stop at the dam, same turnoff used to walk down to the Ancient Rock Carving. This is also where you exit the bus before making way to the Shek Pik Country Trail starting point about 6-8 minutes east of here.

    Serene waters
    There are a total of four small reservoirs at the intersection between Kowloon and the New Territories. With trails of varying levels of difficulty, this part of Kam Chan Country Park is the ideal place to really enjoy the nature without enduring the huge crowd in other major hiking destinations. The view of the reservoirs is peaceful and priceless. The trail around Kowloon Reservoir is for beginners while Kowloon Byewash Reservoir requires more care and effort. This is also a habitat for monkeys and wild boars.

    Heritage sightseeing around the Kowloon Reservoir
    This is a group of five waterworks structures located at the Kowloon Reservoir in the Kam Shan Country Park. These were built in 1910 as part of the construction of the lake and include the Main Dam, Main Dam Valve House, Spillway Dam, Spillway Dam Recorder House and Recorder House. These are Declared Monuments of Hong Kong (2009).

    You can see the historic structures conveniently upon entering the country park from the south where you find the Kowloon Reservoir and the small cluster of lakes. You will walk over the two dams. The Main Dam is curved and fairly interesting. You'll walk past the Main Dam House Valve. Note the 1910 date engraved above the door.

    History and heritage buffs will appreciate spending a few minutes viewing the historic structures of the Kowloon Reservoir. Then you can continue onward with your hike up Golden Hill Road as part of your hike through the country park.
