Mongkok is a bustling district where Hong Kong's youthfulness, energy and creativity collides with old school culture, buildings and markets. It is a thriving district that is packed with crowds of all ages going about their respective lives and leisure interests.

There are numerous street markets scattered around Mongkok, one that I like is the Nelson Street Wet Market found on the west side of Nathan Road and Langham Place shopping mall and situated between Tong Mi Road (west) and Reclamation Street (east).

Nelson Street is lined with vegetable, fruit, meat, seafood, sundries dealers. You'll find loads of delicious fresh food as well as peculiar finds including fresh tofu blocks, thousand year eggs, Chinese medicine packs, frogs and other things you will rarely if ever see in western wet (food) markets.

The market is under large red umbrellas offering shade during midday when the sun is out. Still better to go from mid to late morning (9.30am) when stalls are stocked up and at their best for pictures. The trade-off is that the street can be packed with shoppers at this time of day as well.

In the end, you can actually traditional wet markets all around Hong Kong. If you are in Mongkok and interested in seeing one, this is a convenient and fun one to visit. Otherwise, it is rather easy to find good options elsewhere around the city as well.

The week is coming to an end, you can welcome Happy Friday
This time, this restaurant is good for friends who want to eat lightly + drink two glasses

Single bone chicken wing with a bite of cheese
The chicken wings are grilled until fragrant, the sauce is sweet, and the cheese is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, full of flavor, it's so addictive

Ravioli with White Truffle Mushroom Sauce
I like that the sauce is creamy enough, but the sauce is good enough to eat mushrooms, Italian ravioli with thin skin

    Grilled Thick Sliced Beef Tongue
Sure enough, it is thick cut, so meaty and juicy, but not at all, and the free wine is first-class!

    Garlic Pepper Frozen Shrimp
Very special cold cut pepper and garlic flavor Yanyan is so not overwhelming, the shrimp is fresh enough

    Egg Tart & Aloha
The names of the cocktails here are so special. The egg tarts have a tiramisu-like milk cap with rum on top, and the aloha has a coconut flavor, which is more creamy. All of them are easy to eat ️

An interesting choice. I think if you're from Hong Kong, it's definitely worth a trip, but if you're visiting on a holiday and you have limited time, not sure it's worth the trip.

A lot of the value of coming here is to contextualize how far/different Hong Kong is now compared to its roots. There are a couple of nice things to buy here, including some traditional ingredients like seafood and shrimp paste. It is also connected to several hiking paths.

My suggestion would be to come in the winter.

BTW the most common way to get here is to go to the Tung Chung MTR station, then take the giant bus that everyone is lining up for.

Lan Kwai Fong (known as LKF) used to be a bustling area full of locals and tourists alike. It’s known for music playing in the streets, amazing restaurants, people drinking and dancing while roaming establishments and some of the best bands in the world but it has taken a major hit. Compared to last year, a shop owner told us sales are down more than. 60% and I believe it...the streets were bare and most places empty at 10pm on a Saturday night. It’s worth checking out in any trip to HK but it’s not what it used to be and I hope it comes back.

Nathan Road runs from Victoria Harbor north thru Tsim Sha Tsui area and Jordan area. It is shopping from one end to the other, along with restaurants and hotels. There are some name brand stores, one of a kind stores, malls and building shops. This is a very busy and crowded area and more so at night. Watch out for the huksters wanting to make a suit for you. They are annoying. Although there is a large Sheraton and Holiday Inn here, the lower portion of Nathan Road has many undesireables hanging out at all times especially at night. With that said, it is still a very safe area, well lit and crowded.

Causeway Bay, accessible by trams which pass by the main street of the area, or MTR subway, is a huge shoppers delight. Along with The Sogo Department Store. If you are not out to shop, try visiting during lunch time . The mass of humanity as workers flood out of office towers for lunch is breathtaking. Just stand back and watch or get in the middle of the crush. There are many office tower malls like Hysan or Times Square and a plethora of small mom and pop shops. You are sure to find something to buy.

Sai Kung is a vast area nicknamed Hong Kong's backyard. Its largely untapped natural wonder makes it a popular weekend destination for locals. The small town center is a vibrant place with a unique, bucolic vibe unfound in Hong Kong. Most tourists come for a seafood feast at the waterfront. An interesting option for travelers.

Decent place to go shopping when you are in Hong Kong. Even though we still had to wear masks outdoors in 2022 which was a shame, it was still quite fun to go outside and go shopping for a while. Excellent for those who are entertained in shopping and exploring.

Sham Shui Po (SSP) can be an interesting district to visit for the cheap street markets, computer and electronic shops and handful of heritage buildings. However, a large tract of the district is going through a gentrification of sorts, particularly the area between Nam Cheong Street and the Prince Edwards neighbourhood, south of the MTR Station and old street markets.

In recent years, many of the old shophouses and businesses here have been refurbished and spruced up with local tanneries, galleries, lifestyle product shops and the likes. Perhaps most interestingly, the area has seen a wave of coffee shop openings over the past few years. Today, there are probably 20 coffee shops and just about as many tea, vegetarian, light bite and dessert cafes that line Lai Chi Kok Rd., Tai Nan St., Ki Lung St., Yu Chau St. and Apliu St. providing a load of interesting options in this area of SSP.

The coffee shops are a fairly diverse lot and some draw on the history and heritage of the buildings or streets they occupy. So Coffee & Gin (Lai Chi Kok Rd) and Bold Coffee (Ki Lung St) do well in this regard. Some places have become instragram hotspots like Dozy Cafe (Ki Lung St) and Colour Brown (Wong Chuk St) while others offer some really good desserts such as the pistachio honey cake at The Soul Room (Ki Lung St). A handful convert from coffee shops to wine or cocktail bars in the evening. Slash Coffee Bar (Ki Lung St) may be the best of this lot. Lots of other interesting places to pick and choose from if in SSP and looking for a cup of black.

The district was formed in 1982 from the districts of Kowloon City, Hung Hom, Ho Ma Tin and others. After the closure of Kai Tak Airport in 1998, restrictions on the height of buildings were lifted and the construction of multi-storey complexes began to actively begin in the district. There are many parks concentrated here.

Discovery Bay is a resort town on the eastern end of Lantau Island that is connected to Tung Chung and other locations on the island by way of public bus as well as Central (HK Island) by way of regular ferry service.

This is a popular residential and weekend leisure spot in Hong Kong including a nice beach, park, golf course and several shopping mall venues with low-key retailers and plenty of restaurants, bars and coffee shops some with waterfront seating. The DB Plaza has an ice-rink and the beach includes a large children's playground area. There is a hotel called Auberge here as well. Also worth note, there are public buses that connect the DB North, Plaza and Deck shopping and dining venues.

It is similar to Stanley on the south of Hong Kong Island and a bit like the Sai Kung seaside village in the New Territories, a good place to spend 1/2 a day relaxing and enjoying seaside and beach life.

Note: A nice way to experience Discovery Bay is at the end of hikes from Mui Wo, another smaller and more casual seaside community on the southeast side of Lantau. There are two main hiking routes, both fairly interesting. The northern route which combines part of the Olympic Trail with the Lo Fu Tau Country Trail is more challenging but has better views of Discovery Bay as you approach. The various waterfront bars and restaurants are rather perfect after your long hike, a good opportunity to rest up before taking ferry back to Central.
