What travellers are saying
- Frances BYorkshire, UK911 contributionsFor such a historical city with some wonderful at architectural finds, Meknes is looking a little sorry for itself at the moment.
There is a lot of construction and conservation work going on and this understandably impacts the visitors overall impression of the place.
There are some wonderful parts. The medina is old and interesting and far better value for money than some of the bigger cities.
Meknes has some green spaces to enjoy, some close to the medina. It is a city that can be easily navigated on foot.
I loved the historical significance of this city but felt a little disappointed in its presentation. It looks somewhat tired and neglected.
That said, it is still worth a visit if you are close-byWritten 23 January 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The building itself is quite lovely, with an open garden in the centre that was very lush and pretty. The exhibits are interesting - lots of instruments and traditional clothing, and a few video enhancements. Our tour moved fairly quickly through but I would have spent a bit more time on my own. It was hard to focus on the exhibits until you were finished really taking in the building itself!Written 1 May 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - BobxxxxCindyNorth Palm Beach, FL1,455 contributionsWe stopped for a meal and wine tasting. The appetizer was either smoked trout or a vegetable carpaccio. Both were excellent. The entrees were either a chicken or fish over a rice side dish. Also both excellent. Wine pairings were superb.Written 27 October 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Musicians Mum608 contributionsClean and beautiful mosaic tiling, even in the public toilet area (lights did not all work but everything spotless)
Much in Meknes is under refurbishment so this is one gem still available. hence quite busy with visitors even in low seasonWritten 28 January 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The wines were delicious, the room was lovely and the cheese/breads/oils served at our tasting were amazing. We bought several bottles of wine to take home. Which we we ended up drinking. So we went to the store and bought more to take home!Written 18 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - walid mWilmington, NC1,095 contributionsThis is a large open square that is fun to walk through and enjoy. Unfortunately, most of it was under renovation when we went.Written 23 April 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - suntan47Chelmsford, UK946 contributionsVisited as part of a tour group . We walked through the gateway . The decorative mosaic pattern is lovely. The gate is so thick with huge wooden doors . Quite a work of art .Written 16 October 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.

- Fergs85Thornton-Le-Dale, UK1,036 contributionsWe stopped off here halfway through a day trip to Meknes and Volubilis. We enjoyed lunch at a kebab place on the main street – very atmospheric, with a bustling atmosphere. Moulay Idriss is a national pilgrimage site and in fact was not accessible to non-Muslims until around 100 years ago. Even now many of us won’t be able to see very much of the tomb of Moulay Idriss: in fact, as you approach the mosque a wooden bar clearly indicates where non-Muslims must stop, and can only look on from that point. You will probably find that a local “guide” will show you how to navigate the warren of streets and alleyways up to the higher reaches of the village for some good views from above. Moulay Idriss was assassinated in the year 791, but his son. Idriss II went on to establish the city of Fez and is buried there.Written 30 October 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Deryn HWaterlooville, UK2,282 contributionsWe toured Mekness as part of our tour of the country and came across this water catchment built at the same time as the fort. Nowadays it just irrigates the golf course and gardens whereas before it was used for the fort and farming outside. Great at sunset - unfortunately I don't have a photo then.Written 25 February 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
