After Tropical Storm Sara derailed our original plans, Erolyn and Jason made it their mission to salvage what we could and treat us to true Belizean hospitality! We were served delicious croissants for breakfast as we set out in their comfy limo, and enjoyed stimulating conversation about Belizean life while we traveled to the Mayan ruins. At Altun Ha, Erolyn went above and beyond to introduce us to Mayan culture and the circumstances that lead to the discovery of the site, but she also identified the uses of indigenous plants effective in treating various ailments, most notably the Polly Redheaded plant. Since cave tubing was out of the question due to rising water levels, Jason drove us to the Belize Zoo, after stopping for a tasty lunch of local cuisine. At the zoo, Erolyn guided us to each enclosure and provided additional information about the animals we encountered, many of which were rescued/rehabilitated. The limo's well-stocked bar was much appreciated after a day spent in the heat and humidity. It was a great way to spend the last day of our vacation!
