What travellers are saying
- Sarah CAshtead, UK1,290 contributionsWe were recommended this gallery and it was certainly unusual, with underground experiences and wacky modern art sculptures, and lovely views out to the harbour area. Not much of the art was to our tastes but the building was interesting and the experience fascinatingWritten 27 February 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Sam GrimshawDunfermline, UK50 contributionsLovely museum with lots of exhibits and boats to go on, would definitely recommend the submarine it is worth waiting for. The cafe does lovely food and lots to see and do for all ages.Written 7 January 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Geoffrey ELondon, UK500 contributionsImagine you are sentenced to death for stealing a purse in 1820 and your sentence is commuted to being shipped to an unknown land.
Now visit the museum and find out what that was like and what Sydney was like.
The superb commentary from the perspective of the convicts brings to life the exhibits, the wonderful scale models and images of the museum. It shines a light on the plight of these men and women.
Equally or more important it is.deeply humbling to see what happened to the native Australians at the hand of the colonists.
Please take 90 minutes or 2 hours out of your trip to learn this important history and hopefully give everyone resolve to understand others and live in harmony.
For the record there is no charge to enter. Do not be fooled by that. This is a first class museum.

Small group max 15 (you have to make your bookings early as tickets quickly sold out!!) which was excellent. With night tour, you'll get the opportunity to look through two telescopes to view planets. Luck was not one our side as it was very cloudy, hence the telescope was directed to man made objects in the Sydney harbour area instead. My guide was Nadia which was very knowledgeable engaged well with the group. Highly recommended!Written 19 January 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Michael B1 contributionGraham has unusual but extremely interesting artwork. We were drawn immediately into his gallery as we happened to walk past. - smiler1956Birmingham, UK519 contributionsVisited this wonderful museum with my wife. It is based in an old tram shed, which has been tastefully added to with modern glass buildings. An eclectic mix of exhibitions, from fashion to steam machinery, airplanes, steam railway and space exploration. The space station mock up is particularly impressive. A great place to visit.Written 12 February 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Lisa F15 contributionsVery nice museum. Admission is free on Sundays. They also offer free guided tours. I would recommend 2 hours. There’s a nice little cafe upstairs with sandwiches, desserts and coffees (including specialty types in the machine). Entire cafe is kosher. Very close to the 333 bus stop on Oxford street. Near St. Vincent’s Hospital. Best not to bring plastic bags or anything extra because you have to store in a locker near the entrance (free of charge).Written 17 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - ella020United Kingdom331 contributionsThis memorial is a icon that symbolizes the importance of an area you can pay your respects to the ANZAC regiment who fought for king and country. A free tour and a worthwhile visit if in Sydney.Written 12 November 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Maddy SNewcastle, Australia7 contributionsAlthough it was a little hot and crowded, the set up of the establishment and the figures themselves are awesome. I particularly loved learning about the history of madame tussaud herself!Written 30 October 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - jbushman2017Nipomo, CA492 contributionsThis museum is directly adjacent to where all the cruise ships dock in Sydney Harbour at the base of The Rocks Area of town. The museum is free and is very accessible. The museum collection is not large which is why I gave it a 4 instead of a 5. The collection I saw was primarily showing indigenous art and it was very striking. The museum has a great cafe on the upper floor that includes both an indoors and outdoor seating area and from the cafe you can look down on the cruise ships and if there are no cruise ships, you instead get a terrific view of the Sydney Opera House. The building and its facilities are terrific. Alas, worth your time but wish there was more to see.Written 9 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - OliviaMuswellbrook, Australia93 contributionsFantastic-my daughters bought me here a few years ago (after they came on a school excursion).
Keep your mind open and absorb it all.
I’m not an ‘art’ critique or follower, but I appreciate the stories and perspectives this gallery offers.
The cafe is out of this world as well, a real gem. If anything, having a tea and something to eat is a fantastic way to end the trip. I took hubby on this trip and he loved it. Staff were so good, from the staff who are supervising the artworks to the fantastic cafe staff, they couldn’t be more helpful.
We will return. It’s a fabulous asset to people.Written 12 July 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
