What travellers are saying
- 2TropicsTravelersOrlando, FL95 contributionsFascinating information about the eruption that took out 1/3 of the island. The museum’s centerpiece are a few excavated homes and everything is absolutely fascinating. The dedication to the community, victims and heroes is quite powerful. Definitely worth the time if you are on the island.Written 24 November 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Sarald6717Marion, MA2 contributionsGood small aquarium to support the rescue Belugas and the Puffins. Wish we could have seen. The Belugas but they were in the open water area and yours out there hadn’t begun yet. Website said it was closed so had we not walked by we mmm and saw lights on we would have missed it! Need to keep website current/ updatedWritten 7 May 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.

- Jonas GunnarssonStockholm, Sweden676 contributionsThe journey to and from Vestmannaeyar is nice. Check-in and boarding is hassle free and the ferry itself is modern and nice. Not that there are a whole lot of alternatives, but anyway...Written 8 October 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Mountains2SeaMontana509 contributionsGorgeous spot in the world! We missed the Puffins, but scenery was outstanding and nice easy hike around hillsides & cliffs! Highly recommend!! Even some interpretive boards with lots of translations! Easy to get to with small parking lot. 30-45 mins is about perfect here.Written 26 September 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - RussellYokoiLittle Chalfont, UK49 contributionsAdventurous hike up (our 12 year old turned back at the second ladder) so not for everyone. But fantastic views and scary enough for the teenagers and me.Written 22 July 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Isabelle LLa Habra, CA35 contributionsHonestly the most underrated museum ever! We stumbled upon this museum while looking for the elephant rock and oh man if it isn't the highlight of our trip. We were greeted by the guide who told us a little story. The wax figures were very well made. And then you go into the other room where we were just bombarded with hospitality. We got to wear a shawl and eat icelandic snacks and even skål(ed) with a shot of icelandic vodka. This little museum honestly fulfilled my little nerdy viking fantasy and is exactly what I was looking for. Do NOT miss this hidden little gem when you visit the westman island!!Written 28 May 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Brian DDenver, CO2,388 contributionsGreat museum that goes through the whole history of this island, including the events, people and nature. The museum was closed, but the staff was so nice to open the museum so that I could go in and look around at all of the terrific exhibits. No one else was in the museum, so I had lots of time to look around and see and study every single exhibit. It was amazingly well done and well maintained. The museum goes through the entire history of the island - volcanos, attacks from foreign lands, rebuilding, fishing, tourism, and a whole lot more! Photos and artifacts provide details and recount all of the history. Some of the audio interviews are amazing from survivors of the volcano. Don't miss the exhibits on the athletes with their medals and the national costumes of Iceland to wrap up the tour. The museum is easy to miss, as it is located on the second floor of the library. So if you think you are lost, you might just be in the right place after all!Written 24 November 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - HarpaSigmReykjavik, Iceland59 contributionsYou can walk around this area and get great views to all directions. Nice hiking area and a quiet place. We meet a couple of sheep’s on our walk.Written 11 July 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- HarpaSigmReykjavik, Iceland59 contributionsTo get there you drive Stórhöfðavegur and turn right at the sign Breiðabakki. You park at the parking lot and walk the gravel pathway. You follow it and it will lead you to this place. I love this place, one of my favourite on the island. You will see Tuff formations, often with big boulders in it, and on top is lava. The ocean has eroded the Tuff so you can see many beautiful formations. We saw seals in the ocean and birds flew around us.Written 10 July 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
