What travellers are saying
- Tom JLondon, UK1,756 contributionsNeedless to say if you've been to Reykjavik...you've seen this church! The tallest building around it is not surprising it can be seen for miles! Really interesting architectural design paying homage to the basalt lava structures that can be witnessed in natural form across the country.
The church is easily accessible in the downtown area on foot, following the famous rainbow road up from Laugavegur. It also has a viewing platform for a magnificent vantage point over the city.
Well worth stopping by, even just from the outside as you won't see another church like it!Written 5 October 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Would recommend a walk around the area too.Written 29 September 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- BrakiWorldTravelerBelgrade, Serbia19,452 contributionsHateigskirkja is a remarkable Lutheran Church, set in a not so tourists frequented part of Reykjavik. Its four spires are visible from most of the capital, so while driving back to our hotel we paid a visit.
Two front black spires are higher than the back ones and make a great contrast to the rest which is all in white.
The Church was open, but unfortunately unaccessible due to private wedding.Written 17 November 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It's a Lutheran Church, but sadly not open when we passed by.
Best views are across the lake, from the (ugly) City Hall.Written 17 November 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - lonewolf44Kingston upon Thames, UK1,303 contributionsVidey Island is just a short ferry trip from Reykjavik and the first thing you see as the boat arrives is this whitewashed little church. The door was unlocked so I was able to get inside: it is unusual as there is a chair next to the altar, which is apparently where the priest heard confession before the service. There are a few graves inn the churchyard: some of those buried there lived tragically short lives. It is worth going over to Videy for the views across to Reykjavik and for the sense of being in the wilds, despite being so close to the city. There is no permanent population on the island any more.Written 5 August 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - lonewolf44Kingston upon Thames, UK1,303 contributionsThis fantastic modernist church in Seltjarnes, a little suburb on the peninsula jutting out across the bay from downtown Reykjavik looks stunning both inside and out. We were lucky enough to find it open on a Thursday afternoon. It's not far from Grotta Lighthouse so well worth seeing if you've walked out here from Reykjavik.Written 27 July 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
